Lazar Hayward Returns To Campus, Summer League Up Next

Lazar Hayward returned to campus just days after being selected in the 2010 NBA Draft and will soon head to Las Vegas as part of the Minnesota Timberwolves summer league squad.

Many members of the Marquette women's soccer team are active this summer with their respective club and USL teams. Take a look at how the Golden Eagles are spending their summer.

Rachael Sloan and Natalie Kulla returned from U.S. U23 Women's National Team Camp in Carson, Calif., at the Home Depot Center recently. While at camp, the team played two exhibition games versus Pali Blue in which Sloan started the game and recorded two assists in a 4-0 win, while Kulla played the final 30 minutes of the game. Against an Arizona club team, Kulla started the game in net, while Sloan played the second 45 minutes. They are waiting the announcement of the final roster for the 4 Nations Tournament in July.

Kulla is also currently playing for St. Louis Scott Gallagher Elite of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The Elite is in third place in the Midwest South Division.

Ashley Bares, Julia Victor, Lindsey Page and Rachael Sloan are playing for the Chicago RedEleven of the W-League.  They are currently leading the Midwest Division of the W-League with a 3-0-2 record. Bares was named W-League Player of the Week last week after scoring two goals and adding an assist in back-to-back wins.

Lauren Acree, Stephanie Vasos, Ally Miller, Ashley Stemmeler and Katie Hishmeh are playing for FC Milwaukee Nationals (WPSL). The team is currently tied for the Midwest North Division lead with Chicago Eclipse Select.

Lauren Thut, Rachel Brown, Kristi Laurenzi and Karissa Miller are playing for the Chicago Eclipse Select of the WPSL. Eclipse Select is currently tied for the Midwest North Division lead with FC Milwaukee Nationals.

Lisa Philbin won the Region I championship with her U23 FC Delco Fury team, and will be competing at nationals in Kansas City July 23-25.

Rosie Malone-Povolny competed in the Minnesota State cup with the Woodbury Soccer Club U23s and finished second, but still was invited to compete at Nationals in Kansas City July 23-25.

Ally Miller, Ashley Stemmeler, Sammy Kailas, Sam Vicker and Katie Hishmeh won the U19 Wisconsin State Cup with FC Milwaukee and will compete in the Region II championship in Beavercreek, Ohio June 26-30.

Rachel Brown, Karissa Miller and Carly Smith won the U19 Illinois State Cup with Eclipse Select, and will compete in the Region II championship in Beavercreek, Ohio June 26-30.

Incoming freshmen Kate Reigle, Cara and Emily Jacobson and Taylor Madigan won the U18 Wisconsin State Cup with FC Milwaukee and will compete in the Region II championship in Beavercreek, Ohio June 26-30.

Incoming freshman Maegan Kelly won the U18 Kansas State Cup with BVSC STARS Mallorca 91/92 and will compete in the Region II Championship in Beavercreek, Ohio June 26-30.

Ashley Bares is having a productive summer season with the Chicago Red Eleven of the USL's W-League as she was named  the W-League Player of the Week for the week of June 14. Bares scored two goals and added an assist in wins against Kalamazoo and London last week. 

Bares provided the game-winning assist of Katie Megna's goal in a 2-0 win over London (June 12) and scored the Red Eleven's first two goals (29th and 52nd minutes) in a 6-0 win over Kalamazoo (June 9). Her goal in the 29th minute was credited as the game winner.  

Bares currently ranks 19th in the W-League in points and leads the Red Eleven with five points on two goals and one assist. 

Marquette University sophomore Ben Sieg defeated Aaron Gavin 3 and 2 earlier today in the semifinals of the Wisconsin State Golf Association Match Play event being held at Whispering Springs Golf Club in Fond du Lac.

With the victory, Sieg adnvances to the championship match where he will face either 50-year-old Kevin Cahill (Waukesha, Wis.) or recent University of Wisconsin grad Jordan Elsen.

Sieg will attempt to become the first Marquette player to win the WSGA Match Play Championship since Dustin Schwab took home the trophy in 2008.



WSGA Match Play Underway

This week's WSGA Match Play Championship is underway at Whispering Springs Golf Club in Fond du Lac. Four current members of the Marquette men's golf team advanced through Monday's 18-hole stroke-play qualifier and into the first round of match play which began this morning.

Junior guard Darius Johnson-Odom returned home to North Carolina this weekend to participate in Chris Paul's Skills Camp.

The Marquette University Department of Special Collections and University Archives has compiled a digital collection celebrating the achievements of the 67 individuals and five teams enshrined in the Marquette Athletics M Club Hall of Fame.

"The decision to digitize a collection about those enshrined in the M Club Hall of Fame was an easy one," University Archivist Matt Blessing said. "University staff, alumni, the media, and sports fans routinely contact the Libraries for this material. We're glad to offer access via this online resource."

The digital collection contains over 1,200 images and includes every person honored with induction. Click the link below to visit the digital archives.

Blue, Johnson-Odom To Participate In Elite-Level Camps

Newcomer Vander Blue and returnee Darius Johnson-Odom have earned invitations to a pair of prestigious outings this summer.

Blue, who will arrive on campus in July for his debut campaign at MU, heads to San Antonio, Texas next week for the 2010 USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team training camp.  Blue will battle 18 other players for one of 12 spots on the final roster.

Johnson-Odom heads back to his native North Carolina this weekend to take part in the third annual Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp in Winston-Salem. The camp features the top 30 high school guards (15 nationally and 15 from Paul's home state of North Carolina) and 15 of the elite college guards. 

Of the 15 collegiate players at the camp, six play at BIG EAST Conference programs.

MU Soccer Weighs In On 2010 World Cup

Calum Mallace, a broadcast communications student at Marquette University and midfielder on the men's soccer team, caught up with teammates Amilcar Herrera and Michael Alfano, along with members of the Golden Eagles coaching staff, to get their thoughts on the 2010 World Cup which begins Friday, June 11.

Calum, who is a native of Torphichen, Scotland, is a huge fan of the international game. In this video, he shows support for his homeland by sporting the national team's jersey despite the fact Scotland did not qualify for this year's Finals in South Africa.

Matthews-Barro Hit The Court Thursday At The Al

As the professional basketball season winds down, more and more former Marquette standouts are making their way back to campus.  Wesley Matthews, whose debut NBA season has been well documented, was joined today by Ousmane Barro for an open gym run at the Al McGuire Center.

Barro helped lead Szolnok Olajbanyasz (Hungary-A Division) to a deep playoff run, averaging 15.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while shooting 68.4 percent from the floor.  Szolnok was defeated by eventual league champion ZTE KK in the semifinals.

Barro was named first team all-league and earned both defensive player of the year and center of the year accolades.

The Dakar, Senegal, native has already been offered a three-year deal to return to the team.


Marquette incoming freshman Katie Young put on a dominating performance May 26 in the High School Athletes of Milwaukee Against Abuse all-star game at Mount Mary College's Bloechl Center. 

The 5-11 guard out of Kenosha Bradford scored 22 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead the Argonauts past the Pioneers, 66-65. 

The all-star game benefited the St. Rose Youth and Family Center, which specializes in helping troubled girls with sever emotional and behavioral problems.
