Former Marquette University men's golfer Kelly Kretz tied for second place and survived a playoff Tuesday at West Bend Country Club to advance to an upcoming U.S. Open sectional qualifier.

In dramatic fashion, Kretz was the only player in the local qualifying tournament to birdie the closing hole 18, pitching in from 25-feet to earn a spot in a four-person playoff.

Kretz took an uplayable lie off his tee shot on the first playoff hole. He then hit onto the green and knocked in a 2-foot putt for bogey to secure one of four sectional-qualifying positions and a chance to qualify for the U.S. Open, June 16-19, at Congressional Country Club.

MU assistant men's golf coach David Merkow, who as a player has advanced through three U.S. Open local qualifying tournametns during his career, caddied for Kretz on Tuesday.

According to Gary D'Amato of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Kretz intends to turn professional later this summer.
