Three former Marquette golfers survived the stroke-play qualifying round Monday at the WSGA Match Play Championship, which runs through Thursday, June 16 at The Brute Course at Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva, Wis..
Joe Weber and Kelly Kretz each tied for 19th place during Monday's 18-hole stroke-play qualifier, advancing to the first round of match play on Tuesday, June 14.
Meanwhile Mike McDonald and Joe True, Director of Development for MU Athletics, tied for 49th place and were among 22 golfers forced to play off late last night for the final 16 spots with McDonald advancing to match play.
In other news, Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Burlington, Wis. native Tony Romo finished Thursday's round tied for first place with a 2-under-par 70.
Also, yesterday MU freshman Michael Motz carded a 73 at the Georgia State Amateur qualifier. The Georgia State Am is set for July 7-10 at Cherokee Town & Country Club in Atlanta, Ga.
Kretz and 2011 Marquette grad Ben Sieg each tied for second place this past weekend at the Dairyland Open held annually at Lake Wisconsin Country Club.
