It has been an unprecedented fall sports season for
Marquette University in the BIG EAST Conference. The Golden Eagles enter this
week a combined 20-1-0 in league play among the men's and women's soccer and
women's volleyball teams.
Marquette's lone loss was a 3-1 defeat in women's soccer at
West Virginia, a team tied atop the American Division standings with the Golden
Eagles.
The combined .953 winning percentage is by far the best in
program history for the three teams, topping last year's mark of .735 (25-7-2).
It is only the second time since women's soccer played its first conference
season in 1994 that all three teams have had winning percentages above .500 in
league play.
Both women's soccer and volleyball compiled their best conference
seasons in program history in 2010 with 11-0-0 and 11-3 records, respectively.
Men's soccer's 5-0-0 start in 2011 tops its previous high BIG EAST win total of
three (2009 and 2010) and is its highest number of league wins since a 7-2-1
mark in 2002 (Conference USA).
Women's soccer has earned a bye in the first round of the
conference tournament and will host a quarterfinal contest at Valley Fields
later this month, while the men's 15 points rank ahead of No. 1 Connecticut in
their quest for home field advantage and a first round bye.
Women's volleyball plays host to the 2011 BIG EAST Women's
Volleyball Championship on Nov. 18-20 at the Al McGuire Center.
