June 2012 Archives![]() "Throwback Thursday" is a weekly feature in the GoMarquette.com Social Summer Series On the day of the 2012 NBA Draft, this week's edition of GoMarquette.com's Throwback Thursday takes a glimpse back at the selections of Marquette's two most recent NBA champions, Dwyane Wade and Doc Rivers. Wade, of the 2012 NBA Champion Miami Heat, was the highest-drafted player in MU history when the Heat selected him with the fifth pick in 2003. Rivers, whose son, Austin, is expected to be a lottery pick this evening, was the 31st pick by the Atlanta Hawks in 1983. The current Boston Celtics head coach helped the organization win its 17th NBA title in 2008. Marquette's own Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom will be the 55th and 56th Marquette players taken in the NBA Draft if they hear their names called on Thursday evening. Marquette's all-time NBA Draft picks, courtesy of Basketball-Reference.com, can be seen by clicking here.
Below is the video highlight of Rivers' buzzer beater against Notre Dame on Jan. 10, 1981 to defeat the No. 5 Fighting Irish, 54-52.

Q: Coach Todd, what's the main advice you give your student-athletes to reach their maximum potential no matter how talented they are? - Coach MR, Milwaukee A: What we preach day in and day out is CONSISTENCY. Consistency in their work, consistency in their attitude, consistency their effort, and consistency in their nutrition and rest. Whatever you decide to improve upon, do it every day. My 13 year old son has always been big and slow, but not bad athletically. He is 6' and 180lbs and about to grow even more. He wants to get quicker, faster and jump higher. Any thoughts? - Paul, Spring Lake, N.J. Great question. What we do is actually very simple; there is no magic pill or special exercise to achieve what you are looking for. Strength is an important part of staying healthy and becoming a more efficient athlete. Work on push-ups, pull-ups, leg lifts, lunges, single-leg squats and step-ups every day. EVERY DAY. That will get you stronger. Now if you want to run fast, PRACTICE RUNNING FAST. If you want to jump higher, PRACTICE JUMPING. Every day. Your results will be determined by your consistency. In your opinion, what's the best exercise or exercises to strengthen your core? - Brigid, Scottsdale, Ariz. The majority of the questions I received in this forum are about core strength. We really like gymnastic strength holds and using a Powerwheel for core strength. Specifically we really work hard on hanging leg lifts [video] and L-sits [photo] with all of our student-athletes. They may be the most simple of all the gymnastic-strength holds for gymnasts, but for our student-athletes they are extremely challenging to master. Others include front levers, back levers, body levers, and planche hold. We do different progressions and variations of these exercises every day. The Powerwheel is a simple tool that is very challenging as well. We perform arm walks, knee tuck push-ups, pikes, and leg curls with this tool. Good Luck. Great job, Coach. I believe our recent NBA draftees have you to thank. My question: Post heart attack, I became a serious walker, but now my knees are shot. Is there an aerobic regimen that does not involve use of the knees? I have tried water aerobics, but the motion still kills those arthritic joints. - Lee, Springfield, Va. Sounds like a good challenge. I also have an arthritic knee. I find the more I move the better I feel. Moving somehow pushes the fluid out of the joint space. Impact activities (running and jumping) are problematic. In your situation I would try cycling, swimming with a float between your knees, deep water running, and maybe a circuit of upper body lifting. I hope this helps. What is the in-season and off-season training regimen for basketball players? - Enrique, Eagle Pass, Texas The focus of the off season workouts is to get as strong and powerful as possible. We practice acceleration mechanics, deceleration mechanics, and reaction drills in addition to our Olympic lifting, basic gymnastic strength training, and plyometrics. It is the best time of year to become a better individual athlete. The preseason workouts are meant to increase work capacity and to become a better team. In-season workouts depend on your role on the team. The main-minute players have more to do on the court and less to do in the weight room. We try to keep these players strong and healthy for the long grind of the basketball season. The redshirt or role players have more to do in the weight room and just as much to do on the court. We try to waste no time in their development as players. Post-season the key is to evaluate the in-season individual progress while still being active. Five Marquette University soccer players began their summer break by traveling to Alabama after final exams in May to help Habitat for Humanity rebuild a home for the Nero family after their house was destroyed in a tornado. [photo gallery] Charlie Lyon, Eric Pothast, Bryan Ciesiulka, Maggie Edlebeck and Jacie Jermier were out of school less than a week before traveling to Tuscaloosa to assist tornado victims Pam and John Nero with the rebuilding project. "They have obviously been through a lot over the past year," Pothast said of the Nero's, "and it was a great way to kick off our summers. You could tell how grateful they were and it really was a great way for us to give back and be ambassadors for both Marquette University as well as Marquette Soccer." According to Edlebeck, John Nero was nearly pulled through the roof by the very twister that leveled his home, and his wife helped save his live by holding onto him as the tornado touched down overhead. The Nero's story was also re-told by The Crimson White. "We spent the week installing tile and wood floors, building a handicap railing, building shelves, graveling the foundation, painting and so many more projects," Edlebeck recalls. "It was tough work, especially with the Alabama heat, and we were drained after working for nine hours each day. "The trip was a week we'll never forget and made us all feel so blessed to have a roof over our heads." ![]() Fan's Choice Awards is a weekly feature in the GoMarquette.com Social Summer Series

Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Brad Autry was kind enough to volunteer for the inaugural edition of Marquette Mailbag. Here are your questions from the past week and here's what Brad had to say... How is your role different now as an assistant coach vs. your old position? - Jamison, Stevens Point There are NCAA limitations on involvement in recruiting and on-floor coaching in my previous position so those restrictions have now been lifted. I have always been heavily involved with the development of our players in a variety of areas and that will continue. Coach Williams is very good about involving our entire staff in as much of the operation of the program as possible within NCAA rules. We have had a very talented staff here for the last four years and I feel like each of us played an important role in the development of our program. Buzz has continued to add talent in the open positions and has been very prepared for the inevitable changes that come with success. I appreciate the opportunity to continue to move forward in my coaching career and look forward to the new challenges What is one thing about Buzz that most people don't know? - Brian, Syracuse, N.Y. Buzz loves music about as much as any person I've ever known. Buzz, Barb and I have an ongoing name that tune" contest in the office. Given a select few lyrics to a song you have to name the song and/or artist. He is also a connoisseur of the national anthem performances at games. He loves a well sung national anthem! What exactly is in the bag of the book of important things? - Ted Baker, Eustis, NE The bag holds the book of important things. Those important things are varied and on a "need to know" basis only. That kind of information needs only to be in the hands of men trained in the dispensing of said information. I've already said too much. I was never here. What is the hardest thing about recruiting 18 year olds to come and play for Marquette? - Thomas Janowski, Park Ridge, IL The number of people that surround players that are talented enough to help us win a national championship at Marquette. It is absolutely bizarre. Who is going to be the NBA Champions? - Maria Guadalupe Rosas, Milwaukee Hayward = OKC Thunder / Wade = Heat...it's a win/win. I'm a fan of Marquette and great basketball. It will end up being a tremendous series and I believe it goes 7 games. I think it's too close to call. Which of the returning players do you feel is poised for a breakout season in 2012-13 and why? - Boyd, Pecatonica Every year it is interesting to watch how the roles of each player change with the graduation of seniors. We have been very fortunate every year to have those that are "leaders in waiting" rise up and meet the challenge when their time has arrived. We have a very talented core of returners and each will play a critical role in the continued success of our program next year. Have any NBA teams contacted you about Jae or DJO? What are their lives like now as they prepare for the draft and where do you think they'll be picked? - James, Spartanburg, S.C. Many teams have contacted me and our entire staff about Jae and Darius both. The investment that NBA teams are preparing to make in the upcoming draft is staggering. No team will leave any stone unturned in gathering as much information as possible on any possible draft pick. I think they are both handling the pressure of the tryouts very well and have performed at a high level at every opportunity. It's impossible to predict where they will go in the draft because there is so much speculation involved and it is extremely difficult to know exactly what is going to happen past the first 10-15 picks in the 1st round. The recent success of Wes, Lazar and Jimmy out of our program have given both a great deal of confidence that they are prepared regardless of what happens in the draft. All either of them want is an opportunity to prove themselves worthy of being on a roster next year. We all want that for them as well. Who wins one-on-one: you or Buzz? Who's the best player on the staff? - Adam, Providence, RI I think you would get different answers from every person on staff if you asked that same question. We all think we are pretty good...even when we aren't. Buzz can really shoot it and when he gets going you can't give him a look. Jamie McNeilly has us all on age and is a big guard that was a really good player at UNO who I coached against during my time at UALR. Blair Broadhurst was great off the bounce and Todd Smith is a rebounding maniac.....I would say Double E (Ernest Eugene) has the sweetest "raindrop" jumper of them all and I hear Coach Chew can play a little ball...we shall see. But, obviously, I'm the best player....and it's not even close. What thoughts were going through your mind immediately after the Murray State win? - Taylor, Dayton "Did we just win a game to go to the Sweet 16 on the road?" Was the toughest tournament environment I have ever been in with that crowd and their confidence and talent level. Was a huge win that might not have seemed as big as it was. To beat a team that had that kind of roll going in what was essentially a road game?? Huge. Buzz and our players were absolute warriors. Want more from Coach Autry? ![]() "Throwback Thursday" is a weekly feature in the GoMarquette.com Social Summer Series April 22, 2008...That was the monumental day when the Golden Eagles men's golf team captured Marquette's first-ever BIG EAST Championship in any team sport. Marquette was led by the heroics of senior Ted Gray who opened with back-to-back rounds of four-under-par 68. Despite closing with a final-round 75, Gray still managed individual medalist honors, claiming a five-stroke victory over St. John's Keegan Bradley ... you know... the winner of the 2011 PGA Championship and Wanamaker Trophy? No big deal [sarcasm]. Bradley is going for his second major tournament victory this week at the U.S. Open, by the way. "I just tried to play smart," Gray told Golfweek deputy editor Steve Harmon. "It was pretty nerve-racking," Gray recalled. In addition to Gray, Marquette's lineup at the BIG EAST tourney that spring consisted of two-time all-American Mike Van Sickle, All-BIG EAST honoree and current MU assistant coach Michael Bielawski, as well as Kelly Kretz and Dustin Schwab, who rank third and 10th, respectively, in career scoring average. "I honestly can't describe how happy I am," Bielawski told Gary D'Amato of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "This is the happiest golf moment I've had for a very, very long time. We've talked talked about taking Marquette University golf to this place, and we finally got it done." Van Sickle posted a fourth-place finish in the event while Bielawski tied for seventh among individuals, as MU won its third tournament of year, still a single-season school record for wins. Marquette, coached by Tim Grogan, led the nation in eagles that year with 22 during regular-season competition, en route to its first NCAA postseason berth. (L-R): Ted Gray, Mike Van Sickle, head coach Tim Grogan, Michael Bielawski, Kelly Kretz, Dustin Schwab. The entire championship season is well-chronicled in that year's NCAA postseason media guide. Taylor Madigan scored the Golden Eagles' golden goal 18 seconds into overtime to lift 15th-ranked Marquette over defending National Champion Notre Dame, 3-2, at Valley Fields. In a back-and-forth affair, Ashley Stemmeler opened the scoring for MU, notching a goal just 30 seconds into the match, but Notre Dame countered in the 63rd minute to tie the score at 1. Marquette answered just three minutes later, as Maegan Kelly let loose a low drive that found the back of the netting for the go-ahead goal. Notre Dame then responded yet again with an equalizer in the 71st minute and the two teams battled back and forth in the final moments until overtime.
After dropping the first two sets 25-22 and 25-14, Marquette rallied back to beat Seton Hall in five sets, with 25-21, 25-19, and 15-12 victories in the final three sets. Trailing 19-17 in the third set and coming out of a timeout, Ciera Jones unleashed back-to-back crucial kills to even the set. She then combined with junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson for a block to give Marquette a 21-20 lead. From there, three straight attack errors from the Pirates gave Marquette their first life in the match, a 25-21 third set victory. In the fourth set, the Golden Eagles were tested yet again, as Seton Hall opened an early 10-4 advantage, but Beyer and Jones once again rose to the occasion late in the set and had a couple of huge go-ahead kills. A few big attack errors ultimately cost Seton Hall the set, which the Golden Eagles took 25-19. In the deciding fifth set, Beyer took control with four big kills and a service ace. Beyer's kill at 3-2 gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good, and her 16th and final kill put the match away for Marquette. The team mobbed Beyer on the court, and the Marquette women's soccer team erupted from the stands to celebrate as well.
Down late yet again, Jae Crowder scored six points to lead Marquette during a decisive 14-2 run, and the third-seeded Golden Eagles pulled away from Murray State for a 62-53 victory hat sent MU into a second-straight Sweet 16. After two layups from Davante Gardner late in the game, Crowder took a charge and then came down to the other end and coolly drilled a 3, sending the outnumbered Marquette fans into a frenzy. Even Father Pilarz was pumping his fist and screaming, "We are! Marquette!" We were a couple plays from closing the game out, and I just wanted to make the next big play," said Crowder, the Big East player of the year. "I knew at that time it was big in the game, and it was the next big stop that we needed." VOTE NOW
