Marquette to Present Women's Sports Leader of the Year Award

Jan. 30, 2003

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University Athletics Department will honor Lisa Bromley with its ninth annual Milwaukee Women's Sports Leader award, sponsored by the Marquette University and Conference USA.

Bromley will receive the award at a halftime ceremony during the Marquette and Houston at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The game is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.

The award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of girls and women's sports in the Milwaukee area. Bromley teaches physical education and health, and has coached girls' volleyball and basketball during the past 18 years in the Shorewood and Whitefish Bay school districts.

While coaching at Shorewood High School, Bromley took over struggling volleyball and basketball programs and within two seasons turned both programs around, including three conference championship wins and a third place finish at state for the volleyball program.

Through her teaching, Bromley has developed and implemented a women's health course at Shorewood High School to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of junior and senior girls. She has also revamped the entire Physical Education curriculum to include the fundraising, building and utilization of the Shorewood Community Fitness Center. In addition to these huge undertakings, she was the recipient of the Herb Kohl Fellowship in 2000.

"We are thrilled that an educator like Lisa was nominated for our award this year," Associate Athletics Director Sarah Bobert said. "She represents a career of service and leadership to young women through her coaching and teaching."

Bromley received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wis.-La Crosse and a master's degree from Mount Mary College.

Previous winners of the award include: Joan Giannou (2002), Carol Wolter (2001), David Flanagan (2000), Stacey Roberts (1999), Myrtle Jeske (1998), Mary Ryan (1997), Keith Noll (1996), and Shirley Martin (1995).
