BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes of the Year: Male | Female

NEW YORK -
Marquette University senior Pat Sanchez and redshirt junior Meghan Niemann were named Marquette’s Institutional BIG EAST Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the year, presented by Sunkist, the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee announced on Friday. The duo will each receive a $2,000 graduate scholarship.

Sanchez, a native of Mazatlan, Mexico who is set to graduate in May with a degree in finance, continues to add to a decorated career both in academics and for the men's golf team.

In 2014-15, Sanchez was the BIG EAST co-champion, helping lead Marquette to its second league title and NCAA berth in program history.  BIG EAST coaches also voted Sanchez as the league’s player of the year - he finished fourth in league scoring average at 73.53, shot 13 rounds of par or better and posted six top-15 finishes.  Sanchez also became one of two players in program history to earn All-BIG EAST honors three times.  In July of 2015, Sanchez was recognized by the BIG EAST as one of MU’s three Sport Excellence Award winners, given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community.  Sanchez was also one of four MU players to earn a spot on the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar team.

Niemann, a redshirt junior on Marquette’s women’s volleyball team, is an elementary education and math major and has been selected to the BIG EAST All-Academic team on three occasions and is a three-time First Team All-BIG EAST honoree.

The Jackson, Wisconsin native has been a member of three NCAA Championship volleyball teams and was a key figure in this season’s squad that advanced to the NCAA second round and finished with a 22-12 record. Niemann finished the season with a .314 attack percentage and averaged 1.98 kills per set and 0.96 blocks per set, while ranking third on the Golden Eagles with 334.0 points scored. In 2014, Niemann set a single-season Marquette record with 150 blocks, while in 2013, she earned AVCA All-East Coast Region honors and was named an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention.

Rachel Daly and Thomas Hackimer from St. John’s were named the overall BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes of the Year and will receive a $4,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or post graduate studies.

Twenty student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 10 member institutions) were also named as BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners.
