$2.5 Million Matching Gift Pledged For McGuire Center
March 3, 2002
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University President Father Robert Wild announced Friday evening (Mar. 1) that a matching gift of $2.5 million has been pledged for construction of the Al McGuire Center. However, for Marquette to receive this money the university must raise a matching $2.5 million by April 18th. That is when Al's Big Dance, a McGuire Center fundraising dinner and celebration, takes place. "This is a big challenge," said Father Wild, "but together it is one I know we can meet." Father Wild stated that if the money is raised the university will break ground on the project.
The McGuire Center will be a $31 million first-class facility for men's basketball practice and a home for women's basketball and volleyball games. The McGuire Center will also house centers for academic support, sports medicine and strength and conditioning for student athletes. It is named after the late Al McGuire who coached Marquette's men's basketball team to the national championship in 1977.
The McGuire Center will be located on Wells street between 11th and 12th streets.
