The Week in Review...
Women?s Tennis (5-15)
? The Marquette women?s tennis team closed out its regular season with a sweep of Wis.-Green Bay Thursday at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles head into Conference USA action with a 5-15 record. After sweeping the doubles point, Marquette took that momentum into singles action, winning all spots in straight sets.
Maria Calbeto won the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, over Heather Harding. At the No. 3 spot, Erin Watkins took a 6-2, 6-3, decision over Jenny Tan. Elsemieke Dokter defeated Amber Murdock, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 2 match.
The No. 4 match belonged to Francina Bonnelly, who with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Megan Gregory. Dominika Dabrowski followed Bonnelly?s lead ? taking a 6-2, 6-2, win from Kristen Leeder in the No. 5 matchup. Closing out the lineup for Marquette was Andrea Bukacek with a 6-1, 6-4, win over Amy Meissner.
Outdoor Track and Field
? Saturday, the Golden Eagles concluded the two day Pacesetter Invitational at Indiana State. The Marquette women brought home third place with 107 points while the men placed fourth with 90.5.
Friday afternoon the teams got off to a fast start as the women and men ended the first day of competition in second and third place, respectively. On the first day of competition Emily Leklem extended her streak of first place finishes on the young outdoor season to four with a victory in the shot put. After breaking the school record last weekend Leklem came out trying to best herself once again. Her toss of 146-feet 4 1/2-inches earned the women 10 points in the event. Senior Andrea Engelmann grabbed five points in the hammer throw with a distance of 170-feet 4-inches. Also on Friday, MU?s Charles Mashozhera took second in the triple jump with a leap of 48-feet 0 3/4-inches. Jonathan Rosploch also earned points on Friday, taking third in the shot put and eighth in the hammer throw.
On Saturday when action resumed, Christina Andalcio-O?Neil grabbed two fourth place finishes in two events. Her 12.17-seconds in the 100 meters and 25.2-seconds in the 200 meters garnered five points each. In the 800 meters, freshman Cassie Peller placed second with a time of 2:13.95. Another second place finish was turned in by Brianna Dahm in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. On the men?s side Saturday, freshman Jed Burey ran the 800 meters in 1:53.78. Jeremy Williams ran a 9:30.27 for second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Matt Piekarski finished second in the javelin throw with a heave of 173-feet, 8-inches. The Marquette men also placed second in the 4x400-meter relay.
Games to Watch ...
Monday, April 18
? The golf team begins its quest for a Conference USA title as it tees off in the first round of the C-USA Championship in Gulf Shores, Miss. Play continues with the second round on Tuesday, April 19, and the final round on Wednesday, April 20.
Thursday, April 21
? Both the men?s and women?s tennis teams take their shots at a C-USA championship. The men?s tournament is being held in Louisville, Ky., while the women?s event is in Fort Worth, Texas. After completing first-round play on Thursday, second round competition is set for Friday, April 22. The third round will be held on Saturday, April 23, and the final rounds will take place on Sunday, April 24.
Saturday, April 23
? The Marquette men?s and women?s outdoor track and field teams will square off with the best the midwest has to offer at the prestigious Central Collegiate Championships in Champaign, Ill.
