MILWAUKEE - Roughly 100 Marquette University student-athletes representing five programs participated Saturday afternoon in MU's annual Hunger Clean-Up initiative at various sites around the greater Milwaukee area. Hunger Clean-Up, in its 24th year, is one of Marquette's long standing traditions that brings the Marquette and Milwaukee communities together to address the issues of homelessness, hunger and poverty.
"Hunger Clean-Up at Marquette is the largest service day for the entire campus with usually over 1,500 students participating," Marquette Assistant Athletics Director, Academic Services/Life Skills Coordinator Adrienne Ridgeway said. "It is nice that our student-athletes get to participate in this large event as usually they do so much service that is separated. It is good to see this opportunity for them to participate with the larger student population."
Student-athletes from men's and women's basketball, women's soccer and volleyball, as well as men's golf took part in the community service project on Saturday morning and afternoon.
Individuals from each of the five squads were in charge of organizing the team's effort and registering their teammates for the events.
"Hunger Clean-Up was a really fun time for our team and provided an awesome opportunity for us to give back to the Milwaukee community," said freshman volleyball player Meghan Niemann, who along with classmate Erin Lehman, spearheaded the women's volleyball team's involvement with the event. "It was a great experience to do something with our team that had a large impact on our surrounding area, yet did not have anything to do with volleyball."
In addition to Niemann and Lehman with women's volleyball, sophomore Derrick Wilson and Steve Taylor, Jr., coordinated the involvement from the men's basketball team, while junior Katherine Plouffe helped register eight women's basketball players. Ashley Stemmeler and Katie Hishmeh oversaw the involvement of women's soccer and the men's golf team was led by CJ Swift and Austin Wilson.
