NCAA Honors Athletics Programs For High Academic Achievement

April 27, 2007

MILWAUKEE - Seven Marquette University athletics programs - men's golf, men's & women's indoor track, men's and women's outdoor track, women's cross country and volleyball - were honored today by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest Academic Progress Rate scores.

These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort.

"We congratulate and are proud of the student-athletes who have worked hard to earn this well-deserved recognition from the NCAA. Their accomplishment embodies the department mission of striving for excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and service to others in the Jesuit tradition," said Marquette Interim Athletic Director Steve Cottingham.

Marquette's seven high-performing programs were the third most in the Big East Conference. Georgetown, Notre Dame and Villanova each had 11 teams recognized.

Overall, 839 teams representing 217 Division I colleges and universities received awards, or two-thirds of the 326 institutions that compete in NCAA Division I athletics. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 975 to a perfect 1,000.

The Big East Conference had the third-most high-performing squads with 63 teams, finishing behind only the Ivy League (152) and Patriot League (92).
