MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics hosted a luncheon last Friday, May 3, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of Title IX and recognized the opportunities for women in athletics at Marquette.

The luncheon was held at the Wisconsin Club and was hosted by former Marquette women's basketball player, Kareeda Chones-Aguam. Female student-athletes at Marquette, coaching staff of women's sports at MU, Marquette administration and female staff members, along with female donors that support Marquette Athletics were all in attendance on Friday.

"Marquette Athletics was proud to host a luncheon that celebrated females in athletics, along with the 40th anniversary of the passing of Title IX," Marquette Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator, Sarah Bobert said. "We were happy to gather with our female student-athletes, staff and donors in the Milwaukee area to discuss the importance of Title IX and celebrate the achievement women have made in athletics over the past 40 years."

The event's keynote speaker was Judith M. Sweet, Co-Director of the Alliance of Women's Coaches. Sweet spoke of the history behind Title IX and the great opportunities that have been presented to women since it was passed in 1972. The former NCAA Senior Vice President and UC San Diego Director of Athletics also discussed the need for women to take on leadership roles in all areas of athletics.

Dr. Kristen Maskala, a former Marquette women's basketball player, talked about being a student-athlete at Marquette and how it helped shape her life and career as an orthopedic surgeon.

Offering the perspective of a current Marquette student-athlete, graduate student and women's lacrosse player Lisa Beltramello, gave a touching speech on how playing lacrosse and being a part of MU's inaugural season has helped shape her college experience.

The final speaker at the luncheon was Anne Zizzo, a Marquette University graduate, current Marquette University Board of Trustee member, and Chair of Marquette's Advancement Committee of the board. Zizzo is President and CEO of Zizzo Group Marketing + Public Relations + New Media which provides award winning services for clients throughout the country and is recognized as one of Milwaukee's best places to work by Milwaukee magazine. She discussed the importance of generating financial support that will continue to provide opportunities for female student-athletes to participate at Marquette.

The "We Can Play" luncheon was sponsored by the Hush Family, M Club, Marquette College of Professional Studies and the National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School.
