Golden Eagles earn most 2016-17 team titles in BIG EAST

The 2016-17 academic year was a banner one for the Marquette University in the BIG EAST Conference as MU led the way in the league with six team titles in addition to four runner-up finishes. Only Villanova (21) has more team titles than MU (17) since realignment in 2013, and Marquette's 10 in the last two years are three more than the next closest in Georgetown (7) and DePaul (7).

Women's track and field successfully defended its crowns during both the indoor and outdoor campaigns, while men's lacrosse knocked off top-seeded Denver once again to win its second-straight BIG EAST title. Freshman medalist Matthew Bachmann led the men's golf team to a remarkable come-from-behind final round at Callawassie Island for head coach Steve Bailey's second league title in three seasons, while Markus Roeders and the women's soccer program captured its sixth BIG EAST regular season title during the fall.

Perhaps the biggest story of the year came at the Al McGuire Center in the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship as MU alumna and third-year head coach Carolyn Kieger led the Golden Eagles past DePaul for their first BIG EAST crown.

Newsworthy start to the summer for men's lacrosse

The 2017 NCAA lacrosse season may have ended over Memorial Day weekend, but the news hasn't slowed down for the two-time defending BIG EAST champion men's lacrosse program. Ryan McNamara and Andy DeMichiei joined a growing number of MU players in the professional ranks after being selected in the MLL draft, while MU alums made early season noise in the league. Just this past weekend McNamara made his pro debut, Liam Byrnes won the NLL's Champion's Cup with the Georgia Swarm and Joe Amplo announced he would remain as head coach at Marquette.

WBB adds highest-ranked newcomer in program history

The BIG EAST champion women's basketball team announced the addition of its first McDonald's All-American in program history on May 17 in Ohio State-transfer Tori McCoy. The 6-foot-4 McCoy was a consensus top-10 national recruit in the class of 2016 and earned Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors in her lone season in Columbus last year. She joins an MU squad this summer that returns all but one key contributor from last season.

Fall schedules released for spectator sports

The fall schedules for Marquette's three fall spectator sports were released in late May with women's volleyball and both soccer programs unveiling their 2017 slates. Women's soccer begins the regular season on Aug. 18 at Valley Fields against Stanford, while the men's squad will play a pair of matches on the road before its home opener on Sept. 1 against UIC. Volleyball begins the year with tournaments at Hawai'i and IUPUI before hosting Loyola-Chicago on Sept. 8 at the Al McGuire Center.
