Al McGuire Center Receives $2 Million Gift
June 21, 2001
Milwaukee -- Marquette University announced today that The Al McGuire Center, Marquette's new athletic facility that will be located on campus, has received a $2 million dollar cash gift from Doral Dental Corporation headquartered in Mequon.
Craig Kasten, an alumnus of Marquette and chairman of Doral Dental, along with Greg Borca, president of Doral Dental, played key roles in securing the gift which has raised Marquette's formal commitments to $13 million while another $4 million has been verbally pledged.
"You might ask, "Why is a company that administers dental programs contributing to the Al McGuire Center,'' said Greg Borcca.
"The answer is quite simple. The mission of Doral Dental is to provide access to quality dental care for all of America's children. But we can't do that if there are not enough dentists to serve this country's population. There is, and will continue to be, a shortage of dentists if something is not done," continued Borca.
" Marquette has the only dental school in Wisconsin. We believe that the Al McGuire Center will be a state-of-the art training facility for basketball talent, and become an essential tool in the rebuilding of the basketball program. But we also believe that it will become an important recruiting tool for both Marquette and its dental school. Coach McGuire once said, "I don't think any decent human being enjoys recruiting." I say let the Al McGuire Center do it for us!"
The Doral Dental Gift is the third major gift announced for the project in the last 10 months. In late August, an anonymous donor pledged $7 million toward the new facility. In October, long-time supporters James and Virginia Wheeler announced a $2 million gift.
