Golden Eagle Helps Lead World to Home Run Derby Crown
July 26, 2006
MILWAUKEE - Marquette's Golden Eagle smashed one home run and the Milwaukee Bucks' Bango cranked two Wednesday afternoon at Helfaer Field, site of the "Grand Day with the Brewers at Miller Park" mascot home run derby, to help lead the World Team to a 13-11 victory over the Brewers.
The Golden Eagle was speechless after the game when asked to comment about the World Team's win, but did flap his wings in a fit of cheer and excitement.
With the derby knotted at 8-8 in the top of the eighth inning, the Golden Eagle sent a two-out pitch deep over the left field wall, a shot estimated at 221 feet, giving the World Team a 10-8 lead.
After one run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a hit by the Klement's Hot Dog that cut the lead to 10-9, Bango came up in the ninth and crushed his second dinger of the game and added another hit, to extend the lead to 13-9. Bernie Brewer was able to pick two hits in the bottom of the inning, but came up just short in leading the Brewers to the come-from-behind victory.
Members of the World Team included the Golden Eagle, Bango, Roscoe of the Milwaukee Admirals, "Sparkle" - the Crest Toothpaste Man, and the bear from The Village at Mannor Park. The Brewers team was made up of Bernie Brewer and the Klement's Hot Dog, Bratwurst, Polish Sausage and Italian Sausage.
Each batter was given three outs per turn at the plate with three outs marking the end of an inning. A fly ball hit in the outfield was counted as one point and a home run counted as two.
The Golden Eagle also batted in the fourth inning, but was unable to put a run on the board.
The home run derby was just part of the day's festivities at Miller Park, presented by The Village at Mannor Park. The morning started with a senior softball game and was followed by a photo session with the mascots. Following the derby, fans moved into Miller Park as the day culminated with the Brewers contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
