The Golden Eagle Pledge | NCAA CHOICES Grant Program

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Marquette University and the Division of Student Affairs are collaborating in the CHOICES for Healthy Golden Eagles campaign, made possible through a grant by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Marquette’s 2009 Core Drug and Alcohol Survey showed that 85.4% of students drink, while 70% of underage students drink. The CHOICES for Healthy Golden Eagles program was developed with these goals in mind.

  1. Expand the education programs and increase the awareness of alcohol prevention and education issues among student-athletes.
  2. Incorporate Healthy Eagle messaging into athletic events and campus media through Public Service Announcements.
  3. Engage in outreach to local high schools through student athletes and peer health educators to increase awareness of college misperceptions.

To accomplish these goals, Marquette has three strategies. The first is training students to deliver 30 minute programs from the standpoint of a student leader, concerned about the well-being of his or her peers. The second is creating a web site within the Office of Student Development to present educational information for students, parents, and faculty/staff about the risks and resources around alcohol education. The third strategy is developing a strategic marketing campaign.

To accomplish this a partnership was formed with the Marquette University College of Communications and the Advertising and Public Relations campaigns course to submit proposals as to what media and which messages would be most effective in reaching the Marquette student population regarding alcohol consumption.

The Backout Before Blackout Campaign launched this summer with the freshman class of 2015 taking the Golden Eagle Pledge ( Through this partnership and the ongoing partnership between the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics the CHOICES for Healthy Golden Eagles campaign is underway for the 2011-12 school year.

Through the CHOICES program, the NCAA provides funding for NCAA member institutions and conferences to integrate athletics into campus-wide efforts to reduce alcohol abuse. CHOICES projects must partner athletics with other campus partners in the development and implementation of effective alcohol-education projects on college campuses.
