Milwaukee - With the Fall semester set to begin Monday morning, the Marquette Athletics Department officially welcomed the students back to campus Saturday afternoon at the 2007 Welcome Back Picnic.

Nearly 2,000 students attended the event, coordinated by Athletics and the Office of Student Development, outside of the Alumni Memorial Union. The picnic capped a week's worth of activities for Marquette's freshmen and other new students.

Members of the Golden Eagle men's basketball and men's soccer teams signed autographs for the students and the programs were introduced to the crowd by head coaches Louis Bennett and Tom Crean.

MU's student body will have opportunities this week to watch both teams in action. The men's soccer squad hosts Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Valley Fields in exhibition action and the men's hoops team will hold an open practice Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center as preparations for the Labor Day foreign tour continue.
