Anonymous $7 Million Gift To Help Fund New Athletic Practice Facility At Marquette
Aug. 30, 2000
MILWAUKEE -- An anonymous donor has pledged up to $7 million toward the construction of a new athletic facility at Marquette University. The donor will match all gifts for the project up to that amount. The new building would, at a minimum, provide practice facilities for men's and women's basketball and could ultimately accommodate other athletic functions as well.
Many details of the new facility remain to be worked out, including final decisions on what functions will be included, where it will belocated and the final price tag. Earlier this year, the universityretained consultants to analyze these and other issues related to the project. The results of that analysis are being reviewed by university officials and will be shared with the university's board of trustees next month.
"I can't begin to adequately express my gratitude to the donor for this wonderful gift," said the Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., Marquette's president. "This new facility will have a tremendously positive impact on our basketball program and, by extension, on our whole athletic program. It's a big step forward for us."
Athletic Director William L. Cords agreed. "This new facility will enable us to address a need that has been a top priority of the athletic department for a long time. By jump-starting the fund-raising so dramatically, the donor is doing a great thing for our student-athletes, for our fans and for the whole university," he said.
With this gift, the athletic facility joins the short list of priorities for the university's comprehensive fund-raising campaign, now ending its second year. The other priorities are the John P. Raynor, S.J. Library, a new facility for the school of dentistry, scholarship and academic program endowment, and, the campus identity and beautification project. An overall dollar goal for the campaign, which will run seven years, has not yet been announced.
