Wade's Return Highlights Annual Student-Athlete Welcome Back Dinner

MILWAUKEE -- Former Marquette University men's basketball star Dwyane Wade was a surprise guest Monday evening at the athletic department's annual Student-Athlete Welcome Back Dinner. The event, which was held on campus at the Alumni Memorial Union, was an introduction to the 2010-11 academic year. Coaches, administrators and support staff were also on hand.
Wade, who led the Golden Eagles to the 2003 Final Four and later was named MVP of 2006 NBA Championship, recalled his own personal experience as a freshman at Marquette and explained to the incoming class the importance of setting a good tone in their first year of college.
He went on to welcome the newcomers to the MU family and wished all of the current student-athletes good luck on their upcoming seasons. Wade's words of encouragement and wisdom were followed by a standing ovation.
Head coaches from each of the respective sports then introduced their incoming freshmen following dinner, along with a brief note regarding their program and what to expect in 2010-11.
To conclude the evening, the MU women's cross country and track and field team was honored with the Magis Team Spirit Award for leadership in the classroom and in the community. Points are awarded each school year for team involvment in community service, team academic performance and support of other teams at games.
