Marquette Hires Steven Condon As Head Athletic Trainer

Sept. 6, 2001

Milwaukee -- Marquette University Athletics Director Bill Cords today announced that Steven Condon has been appointed the department's Head Athletic Trainer. Condon will oversee the efforts of the entire athletic training staff and care for Marquette student-athletes while serving as the trainer for the men's basketball team. Condon replaces former head trainer Dave Leigh who is now splitting his time teaching in the school's exercise physiology department and working as an assistant trainer.

Condon comes to Marquette after serving as the basketball trainer for Iowa State the past two years. In addition to his athletic training duties, Condon handled all travel arrangements for the men's basketball program. While at ISU, he oversaw the athletic training staff for baseball and assisted with football. In his two years at ISU, the Cyclones captured back-to-back Big 12 regular-season titles, made two NCAA Tournament appearances and compiled an overall record of 57-11.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity," Condon said. "During the interview process I could tell that Marquette was a special place. It is an exciting time to be associated with Marquette University. There are a lot of high expectations and I am looking forward to joining the staff here."

Prior to his tenure at Iowa State, he worked at a Athletic Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Clinic in Chicago, from 1995-99. While there, he was responsible for rehabilitation of ankle reconstruction, Achilles tendon repair, knee ACL, PCL, MCL and patella tendon repair, shoulder rotator cuff repair and capsular reconstruction, back conditioning and rehab of lower back surgical procedures, and assorted elbow, wrist, and finger surgeries. Among his patients were NBA standouts Tim Hardaway and Michael Finley. In addition, he served as the head trainer of the Chicago Rockers of the CBA for one year.

A native of Iowa City, Condon was the men's basketball trainer at Arizona from 1985-95. In that time, the Wildcats made 10 NCAA appearances including two trips to the Final Four.

He is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the American Red Cross Advanced First Aid and CPR and the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society.

He earned his bachelor's degree in health education from Northwest Missouri State in 1975 and obtained his master's in physical education from Iowa in 1978

"Dave Leigh served student-athletes, coaches and Marquette with the utmost care for 18 years as head athletic trainer, and we are fortunate to have somebody with Steve Condon's experience and knowledge join the staff in that capacity," said Cords.
