MU Athletics Assists In Hosting Briggs & Al's Run
Sept. 13, 2014
On the crisp and sunny fall morning, Marquette University's campus served as the perfect location for the 2014 Briggs & Al's Run & Walk, which benefits Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
Nearly 20,000 participants either ran or walked in this year's race, which started on 12th and Wisconsin and ended near the Summerfest grounds.
The men's and women's basketball teams visited the Children's Champions breakfast pre-race, before escorting the group to the start line. The players and coaches signed autographs, took pictures and played basketball with all of the children in attendance, a tradition that began several years ago.
The men's and women's lacrosse teams registered nearly 100 participants to compete in the 8K race and several members of MU's track & field and cross country programs were also at the front of the pack. Head men's basketball coach Steve Wojciechowski and women's coach Carolyn Kieger also attempted, along with the rest of the crowd, to keep up with MU president Dr. Michael Lovell.
Some 37 years ago, legendary Marquette men's basketball coach Al McGuire organized the first "Al's Run" in support of Children's Hospital with proceeds going to the prosthetic limb bank. McGuire was the figurehead and organizer of the event for 15 years and when he retired from the event, he had turned it onto one of the largest and most successful races in the Midwest.
