Marquette Basketball Gears Up For Marquette Madness

Oct. 12, 2003

MILWAUKEE - Marquette basketball fans can catch an early glimpse of the 2003-04 Golden Eagle basketball teams on Saturday, October 25, when MU conducts Marquette Madness. The free event will be held at the U.S. Cellular Arena with doors opening at 9:00 p.m., and activities beginning at approximately at 10:00 p.m. Early arrivals to Marquette Madness will receive a free Marquette Madness t-shirt. Serving as the emcee of Marquette Madness will be Michael Knight, morning show host on Milwaukee radio station KISS-FM (103.7).

Nationally, many schools will be holding their respective season-opening Midnight Madness functions the evening of October 17. However, Marquette students will be on fall break at the time so the basketball program will hold Marquette Madness on the 25th so that the student body will be able to participate in the event.

"Our students have been instrumental in helping take our program to a nationally recognized level and we want them to be a part of the opening of the season," said Marquette Head Basketball Coach Tom Crean, two-time Conference USA Coach of the Year. "Their loyal support and enthusiasm certainly has contributed to a 31-1 record at home the past couple of years as well as last year's Conference USA championship and NCAA Final Four appearance. Overall, we've had great support for this event from our fans in the community, Marquette University and students and we look forward to another great night of fun."

One of the highlights of this year's Marquette Madness will be the distribution of the 2002-03 Conference USA championship rings to the players, coaching staff and support staff involved with that team.

A number of contests and prize giveaways are scheduled to take place at Marquette Madness including the Schmit Ford Shootout where a pair of lucky contestants will attempt a half-court shot in hopes of winning a 2004 Ford Focus. Additional contests and drawings for other prizes will be held throughout the evening.

A pair of popular events of past Midnight Madness evenings that will take place again this year are the U.S. Cellular Slam Dunk Contest put on by the men's squad, and the finals of the second annual "Marquette Idol" competition, the school's spin off of the popular television series, American Idol. The first round of the Marquette Idol competition, a Marquette-student only event, will begin on Tuesday, October 21, from 9:00 p.m. until midnight at the Sports Annex. Round two will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at the Annex from 9:00 p.m. until midnight.

Fans attending Marquette Madness will be able to obtain autographs from players and coaches of both the men's and women's teams with the squads being introduced during the evening.

Free shuttles will run from the Union Sports Annex, located at the corner of 16th and Wells Streets on the Marquette campus, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Outside the U.S.Cellular Arena, Pepsi will be handing out free products and radio station
