11th Annual Hank Raymonds Scholarship Auction & Raffle To Be Held Saturday Evening
Nov. 8, 2002
Milwaukee -- The 11th Annual Hank Raymonds Scholarship Auction and Raffle will take place on Saturday, November 9, in the Monaghan Ballroom of the Alumni Memorial Union on the Marquette campus. Money raised through the event benefits the Blue and Gold Athletic Scholarship Fund in Hank Raymonds' name. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. An oral auction will take place at 9:00 p.m.
Hank Raymonds devoted over 25 years of service to Marquette as a basketball coach and athletic director. At his retirement party in 1987, he was presented with a gift of $10,000 in appreciation for his outstanding service to Marquette. He donated the gift back to Marquette, requesting that the money be used to establish an endowment fund in support of non-revenue generating sports. As a result of his generosity and service, the Hank Raymonds Scholarship Auction and Raffle was created and has evolved into an annual event to raise funds for scholarship support of non-revenue sports.
This year's speakers feature a current track student-athlete Susan Barth, a senior majoring exercise science with a 3.89 GPA. Susan currently holds the school record in 10,000 meters and has been all conference in track and cross country all three years at Marquette. The second speaker of the evening is Robert Byrd, a former student-athlete who played under Coach Raymonds. Byrd was the 2002 recipient of the Arts & Sciences Alumni "Person for Others" Award and is the founder of the Bridging the Gap Learning Center. Other notables in attendance will be head coaches: Tom Crean (men's basketball head coach), Terri Mitchell (women's basketball head coach), Dave Uhrich (head track and cross country coach), Steve Adlard (head men's soccer coach), Jody Bronson (head women's tennis coach) and Tim Grogan (head men's gold coach).
Close to 400 guests are expected to attend. Live auction items feature condos in Hawaii, Florida, Montana, Steam Boat Springs, an All-Terrain Vehicle, tickets to the NCAA Final Four and a complete Super Bowl package including air, hotel, game tickets, and Miller Pre-Game Party. Over $130,000 is expected to be raised for athletic scholarships through this event.
