MILWAUKEE - Students opened their hearts and their wallets to help those in need this Thanksgiving holiday. Members of Marquette University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised over $1,000 to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Milwaukee. Catholic Financial Life, formerly Catholic Knights/Catholic Family Life Insurance, provided matching funds. Checks totaling $1,259 were presented to the St. Vincent de Paul Society's Executive Director Lin Fischer at the Al McGuire Center Tuesday afternoon.

"It's an honor to be a student-athlete at Marquette University, but its a privilege to be able to give back to the community through the St. Vincent de Paul Society," said SAAC President and track and field student-athlete Joe Kohut. "It's also an opportunity to say thank you for the generosity in both prayers, well wishes and other contributions."

SAAC is a student-athlete run organization that operates on the behalf of all Marquette student-athletes. Kohut says their goal is to help provide an all-encompassing college experience. Part of that experience is allowing student-athletes to gice back to the very community that supports them.

"SAAC and the Marquette student-athlete community are very grateful for the opportunity that St. Vincent has provided us and are extremely pleased that we found financial support in Catholic Financial Life for our donations. It is a tremendous opportunity for three great Catholic institutions of Milwaukee to join in giving back to the community," said Kohut.

Kohut is an intern at Catholic Financial Life and approached the company about matching any donations they were able to raise on campus.

"We like to support young adults taking initiative to address problems in our community," said John Borgen, Vice President of Fraternal with Catholic Financial Life. "That is why we agreed to provide $500 in matching funds to Marquette's SAAC.  We are also a long-time supporter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and are pleased to make this donation so they can continue to the life-saving work they do with Milwaukee's homeless population."

The combined monetary donation of $1,259.00 will be used to provide resources to those who don't have shelter as the long cold Wisconsin winter approaches.

"We will use these funds to supply individuals and families with warm clothing, lunches, soup on extra cold days and other necessities that will enable them to survive the winter," said Fischer. "Our ultimate goal of course is to help the homeless become self sufficient and find permanent housing but in the meantime, this generous donation will help ease the way for the homeless this winter."

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Milwaukee offers free evening meals at two sites, one at its Family Resource Center on Martin Luther King Drive on the north side and another at its 10th and Madison south side location. The Society also has future plans for more outreach programs aimed at helping the newly homeless or those who have been on the streets for some time.

In addition to the monetary donations collected during the past few weeks, Marquette students also plan to hold a food drive before the end of the year.
