The Week in Review ...

Men?s Basketball (5-0)

? Marquette rattled off five wins in seven days to open the 2004-05 season. After an opening round win over Western Carolina in the BCA Classic, Marquette held Illinois State to a 17.7 field goal percentage in a 60-32 win in the semifinal round of the tournament. A pair of back-to-back Travis Diener three-pointers midway through the second half gave Marquette the momentum it needed to knock off Air Force, 69-65, in the in the championship game of the BCA Classic on Tuesday. On Saturday, Marquette claimed its second tournament championship of the week, winning the Pepsi Blue and Gold Classic with a 66-61 win over Kent State. Steve Novak scored 21 points and Diener had 14 points and 10 assists as he was named MVP of the tournament. Marquette advanced to the tournament final after a win over Sam Houston State, 84-71, on Friday. Dameon Mason led the way for Marquette with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Women?s Basketball (2-0)

? Marquette responded to a challenge by Wis.-Milwaukee with a strong second half as the Golden Eagles defeated the Panthers, 74-66, in the season opener for both teams. Marquette was led by junior guard Carolyn Kieger, who scored 18 points. Christina Quaye's 19 points led Marquette to a 74-63 win over IUPUI on Sunday at the Al McGuire Center. Quaye also grabbed eight rebounds in the Golden Eagle win. Lesley Juedes had a career high with 17 points for Marquette. Marquette finished the game shooting 27-of-58 (58.8 percent) ? including 6-of-12 (50.0 percent) from the three-point line.

Volleyball (22-6)

? Marquette allowed just 56 points to Tulane in a 3-0 (30-24, 30-19, 30-13) sweep in the quarterfinal round of the Conference USA Tournament. Marquette, the third seed in the tournament, was led by senior middle blocker Erica Heisser, who had 15 kills. Senior setter Sarah Vernon logged 32 assists and senior Libero Erin Freer had 14 digs.The following night, Marquette advanced to its first Conference USA Championship match with a 3-1 (30-15, 30-27, 25-30, 30-25) win over Cincinnati. The Golden Eagles will meet top-seed Louisville in the C-USA championship match, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. The match will air on College Sports TV. Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin led Marquette with a double double of 18 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Mueller added 16 kills. Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd and senior middle blocker Erica Heisser each landed 10 kills.

Cross Country

? The Marquette women's cross country team finished 28th overall today at the NCAA National Championship meet. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was junior Jodi Jakubek who placed 108th overall with a 6k time of 22:02. Cassie Peller finished her freshman season with a strong finish of 149th and a time of 22:22 in her first ever NCAA Championship meet. Sophomore Heidi Lindeman was the next Golden Eagle finisher taking 164th in a time of 22:29. Junior Susie Emond was the 197th finisher with a time of 22:57. Right behind her was junior Allison Sauer (203rd, 22:59) and Theresa Emond (206th, 23:01). Rounding out the Marquette finishers was junior Michaela Courtney who took 235th with a time of 23: 41.

Congratulations ...

? Senior setter Sarah Vernon was named Conference USA Setter-of-the-Week and senior middle blocker Erica Heisser was named C-USA Player-of-the-Week, on Monday, Nov. 15. It was Vernon?s fourth selection as Setter-of-the-Week.

? Vernon and junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin were named All-Conference USA second-team members by the conference office. Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd was named to the league?s all-freshman team.

Games to Watch ...

Monday, Nov. 22

? The volleyball team plays for the Conference USA Championship match against top-seed Louisville at 7 p.m. The match will air live on College Sports TV and will air locally on WMLW-Ch. 41.

Wednesday, Nov. 24

? The women?s basketball team kicks off the holiday weekend, taking on Toledo at 7 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center.

Friday, Nov. 26

? The women?s basketball team visits Drake at 7 p.m. in its first road contest of the season.

Saturday, Nov. 27

? The men?s basketball team hits the road for its only non-conference road contest, visiting Oakland at 6 p.m. EST.

Also This Week ...

? The Marquette volleyball team will be hosting an NCAA Tournament Selection Show viewing party at the Union Sports Annex on Sunday, Nov. 28. The party will begin at 5 p.m. with the tournament selection taking place at 5:45 p.m.
