In 2002, he guided WKU to a 12-3 won-lost ledger and the NCAA I-AA national championship ... For his efforts, he was selected as the American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year ... Prior to his stint at Western Kentucky, he served as the assistant head football coach at Pittsburgh for two years (1987-88) ...
