Marquette Looks to Continue NCAA Success

The Marquette University men's basketball team, fresh off the program's first Elite Eight appearance since 2003, begins its ninth season of competition in the BIG EAST Conference this fall. Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Buzz Williams, the Golden Eagles are in the midst of a run that has seen the team participate in eight-straight NCAA Championships. In each of the last three campaigns, MU has advanced to at least the Sweet 16.

The Golden Eagles return nine letterwinners and two starters from last season's squad, including a pair of all-league candidates in senior forwards Davante Gardner and Jamil Wilson.

While the duo combined to start a total of just six games in 2012-13, it contributed 21.2 points and 9.7 boards per contest. Gardner was named the league's top sixth man and honorable mention all-conference.

Six other returnees chipped in at least nine minutes of action per outing last year. Sixth-year center Chris Otule is back after starting all 35 games and junior forward Juan Anderson was in the starting lineup 31 times (13.0 mpg.). Junior Derrick Wilson takes over the point guard duties after backing up Junior Cadougan each of the last two seasons.
