Plenty Of Notes Following Grambling State Victory, Hazel Visits Former Team

Nov. 21, 2009

[11:45 p.m.] Among the visitors to the MU locker room following the Grambling State victory was Pat Hazel, who is in town to visit while his current Boston University squad competes in Puerto Rico. Because he is a transfer, Hazel is unable to travel with the team.

Marquette-Grambling State Postgame Notes:

  • Series History: Marquette leads 3-0
  • The 41 points allowed by MU marks the lowest since MU defeated Florida Gulf Coast 67-37 on March 4, 2008.
  • Senior Lazar Hayward moved past Dwyane Wade and into 25th place in MU history with his first basket of the game. Hayward had 12 points in the contest and now has 1,292 for his career, placing him 24th in school history.
  • Sophomore Chris Otule made the first start of his career.
  • Freshman Erik Williams checked into the game at the midway point of the first half, scoring his first career field goal on a dunk. It was the first time the Houston native has seen action in the opening half this year. Williams ended the contest with a career-high six points.
  • Junior Dwight Buycks almost recorded Marquette's first triple-double since Dwyane Wade's did so against Kentucky in the 2003 Elite 8. The Milwaukee native notched his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and ended the game with seven assists.
  • Sophomore Darius Johnson-Odom reached a career high with 13 points.
  • Junior walk-on Robert Frozena scored his first points of the season with nine seconds remaining in the game. Frozena ended the game with a career-high three points after being fouled on his make from under the basket and making the free throw.
  • Freshman center Youssoupha Mbao saw his first collegiate action at the 6:11 mark of the second half. Mbao was suspended by the NCAA for MU's first two games this season due to amateurism issues. Mbao scored his first point of the year on a free throw late in the second half
  • Grambling held its last lead of the contest at 6-4 before a 19-0 run gave MU a commanding 23-6 advantage.
  • MU also notched a 16-0 run in the middle of the second to take a 71-25 lead.
