Detroit Lions Rookie Matthew Stafford Reaches Milestone Last Recorded By Marquette's Buzz
Nov. 23, 2009
Leading the Detroit Lions to victory for the second time this season, 2009 No.1 overall pick Matthew Stafford did something that has not been done in the National Football League since a Marquette alum did so in 1937. The rookie gunslinger fired five touchdown passes, the final coming with time expired, to defeat the Cleveland Browns 38-37 Sunday afternoon. Former Marquette football player and M Club Hall of Fame member Raymond '"Buzz" Buivid threw five touchdown passes in a single game for the the Chicago Cardinals in 1937, the last time a rookie had thrown five touchdowns in an NFL game. Buivid was the third overall pick by the Cardinals after finishing third in the 1936 Heisman Trophy balloting. That year, Buivid led Marquette to its only bowl appearance, a 16-6 loss to Sammy Baugh-led Texas Christian University in the first ever Cotton Bowl.
