LETTER FROM AD STEVE COTTINGHAM:

Thank you all for supporting Marquette Athletics during what has been a wonderfully successful year. Your passion is truly a great motivator for our student-athletes.

There have been so many highlights over the past three months alone; here are just a few:

Our men's basketball team advanced to the NCAA tournament "Sweet Sixteen" for the first time since 2003 with upset wins over Xavier and Syracuse. The team also won back-to-back games at Madison Square Garden in the BIG EAST Championship and finished the 2010-11 campaign with a record of 22-15.

The women's basketball team concluded a banner year that saw the Golden Eagles win 24 games - second-most in program history - and defeat Texas in thrilling, last-second fashion in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The season ended with a heroic performance at Tennessee in which Coach Mitchell's team gave the top-seeded Volunteers all they could handle.

Led by junior Olga Fischer, the women's tennis team concluded the season with a 19-11 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the BIG EAST. Fischer earned a 20-18 overall record, including a 10-6 mark at No. 1 singles.

Men's Tennis team MVP Dan Mamalat led MU with 23 singles victories in 2010-11. Only a freshman, Mamalat posted a 16-8 mark in dual matches in his first season, helping Marquette to a 14-12 record.

The Marquette track & field program sent six student-athletes to the preliminary round of the NCAA Championship: sprinters Tyler O'Brien and Kyle Winter, distance runners Blake Johnson and Nick Szczech and throwers Jamie Roth and Bret Hardin. O'Brien finished a mere three hundredths of a second short of qualifying for the national quarterfinal.

And in men's golf, senior Kelly Kretz was named to the All-BIG EAST team for the second consecutive year after tying for sixth at the BIG EAST Championship - it was his seventh top-10 finish of his career and included a final-round of 68.

While this season will be difficult to top, we look forward to striving even higher in 2011 and beyond, and we truly appreciate the time and effort you take to support all of our coaches and student-athletes.

Sincerely,

SCottingham Sig

Steve Cottingham
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

STUDENT ATHLETE FOCUS STORY

Born to Ukrainian immigrants, Dan Mamalat moved to the United States at a young age, learning from his parents the value of hard work and the life lessons of sports.

Athletic scholarship aid helped to make it possible for Dan to attend Marquette University and play for the Golden Eagles men's tennis team.

This feature was produced by students in the Diederich College of Communications, developed in support of the Blue & Gold Athletic Scholarship Fund. With collaboration from Marquette Athletics, seniors in the Broadcast & Electric Communications 4997 class produced a series of six video features during the 2011 spring semester.
