A native of Surrey, British Columbia, Kennedy attended Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School, where she was an honor roll student and the 2011 British Columbia High School Track and Field Champion in the hammer throw. She won the provincial title with a toss of 51.91 meters and holds a lifetime-best mark of 52.06 meters.

Kennedy qualified for the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships with a second-place finish in the hammer throw at the Canadian Junior Championships. Her mark of 51.64 meters was a little more than a meter behind the eventual junior national champion, Joanna Franke-Kuhn, whom she joined on the Canadian squad.

Kennedy competed as a junior with the Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club, which earned the top-three finishes in the women's hammer throw at the Canadian championships. She was coached by Richard Collier with Kajaks.
