Track Falls to Milwaukee in Annual Dual Meet
Jan. 22, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads fell to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in dual meet action Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center. The Marquette women fell 71-69, after they dropped the 1,600-meter relay, the day's final event, by six-tenths of a second. The MU men fell 79.50-58.50, but had seven new BIG EAST Conference indoor qualifying marks at the meet. The women had three new athletes reach BIG EAST standards.
The women's meet came down to the 1,600-meter relay as the Panthers pulled out a victory with a time of 3:57.41. Junior Stephanie Grant ran the anchor leg for Marquette and was edged out at the finish line by Milwaukee's Angie Kaufmann.
Last season Marquette captured the men's meet following then-freshman Kyle Winter's anchor leg of the 1,600-meter relay.
Grant also competed in the 300-meter dash, taking first with a personal-best time of 41.47 seconds, the fifth-fastest in school history. Grant finished one spot ahead of her sister, Lauren Grant, a freshman at Milwaukee.
Marquette sophomore and Milwaukee native, Chanel Franklin, notched a personal best time of 7.78 seconds in the 60-meter dash as she claimed the event title. Freshmen Cashay Harris and Carlye Schuh finished third and fourth, respectively and each moved up the Marquette top-10 list in the process.
Junior Lauren Darnall continued her success in the pole vault by taking first place with a height of 3.70 meters. After securing her victory in the event, the Hanover, N.H., native's three attempts to break the 13-foot barrier fell just short. Freshman Abby Croft joined Darnall in the pole vault and reached a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 3.40 meters.
Marquette captured three of the four titles in the throwing events as seniors Joseph Kohut and Jamie Roth won the men's shot put and the women's weight throw, respectively. Freshman Kristen Gaffey also impressed once again with a toss of 13.59 meters and a first-place finish in the women's shot put. Fellow freshmen Kathryn Koeck and Kirsten Walker also competed in the shot put and weight throw, with Koeck finishing third in both events.
Redshirt sophomore David Carbajal reached a personal best by over two meters (7 feet) in the weight throw with a toss of 15.95 meters to qualify him for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
Freshman Michael Saindon pulled out a thrilling victory in the high jump after he, Cheldon Brown and Milwaukee's Nick Hughes each reached 1.95 meters. The trio went to a jump off and Saindon was able to claim the event as Brown and Hughes tied for second.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Bill Bergen Invitational at Iowa State University. Competition is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. in Ames, Iowa.
