AMES, Iowa - A record-setting day in the men's 3,000-meter run paced the Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads as they concluded action Saturday afternoon at the Bill Bergan Invitational in Ames, Iowa at Iowa State University.

"The men's and women's distance did very well this afternoon," Marquette head coach Bert Rogers said. "Nick Szczech ran a very nice in the 3,000 meters and we had numerous personal bests and BIG EAST marks. We are walking away from this meet satisfied with some of the marks put in at this point in the season and looking to improve as we head to Notre Dame next weekend."

Senior Nick Szczech and juniors Blake Johnson and Jack Hackett all moved into the school's top-10 list in the 3,000, while Szczech's time of 8:18.37 ranks third behind former all-American Keith Hanson and all-conference performer Brent Des Roches. Szczech finished as the runner-up, while Johnson was seventh in 8:22.61 and Hackett was eighth in 8:25.33. Johnson is now sixth in MU history, Hackett seventh.

Both Szczech and Johnson's marks qualified them for the BIG EAST Conference Indoor Championships

Redshirt junior Robert Bleem notched a distance for the first time this season in the weight throw, shattering his old personal best by almost three meters with a conference-qualifying mark of 16.42 meters.

Senior Alyssa Davis was the lone event winner for MU in the women's triple jump with a leap of 11.75 meters. Davis' mark is a season best and a BIG EAST qualifying mark.

In the pole vault, junior Lauren Darnall had her streak of three first-place finishes snapped but reached a BIG EAST mark of 3.85 meters to finish third. Freshman Abby Croft finished seventh.

Sophomore sprinter Chanel Franklin notched a personal-best time of 25.48 seconds in the 200-meter dash to qualify for the BIG EAST meet and finished third. MU freshman Carlye Schuh was fourth in 25.97 seconds.

Sarah Ball, the freshman-record holder in the 600, notched a BIG EAST time of 2:15.40 in the women's 800-meter run.

Marquette had three women set a BIG EAST mark in the mile, led by senior Anna Weber's personal-best time of 5:06.15. Evan Ross led the MU men in the mile with a BIG EAST time of 4:14.38.

The women's squad finished fifth, while the men tied for sixth.

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Feb. 4 at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational.
