Track & Field Excels in BIG EAST Tune-up at Hoosier Hills Invitational

Hoosier Hills Invitational BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams competed Friday evening at the Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse, marking the last meet prior to the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Golden Eagles had 12 athletes set personal bests led by a new freshman record in the men's weight throw by William Koeck. Koeck's top distance of 57 feet, 1 inch (17.40 meters) topped his previous PR by over two feet and currently sits as the No. 7 mark in Marquette history. Senior Jonathan Kusowski also notched a personal best of 58 feet, 5 1/4 inches (17.81 meters), the third-best MU mark all-time. Kusowski and Koeck finished fourth and ninth, respectively, in the event. Sophomore Jerrick Backous placed fourth in pole vault with a top height of 15 feet, 1 inch (4.60 meters), topping his personal best by six inches and moving into third all-time at MU. Junior Sarah MacCourtney placed fourth in the high jump with a personal-best leap of 5 feet, 5 1/4 inches (1.66 meters). MacCourtney's new PR is the No. 6 mark all-time.
Five of Marquette six runners in the men's and women's 3,000-meter run combined to notch personal bests on the evening. Junior Patrick Maag led the men in second place with a time of 8:28.61, while freshman Elisia Meyle ran a time of 10:28.46 to place eighth on the women's side. Freshman Kenzie Vicker in the women's mile was the lone student-athlete to record a new BIG EAST-qualifying mark. The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships in New York, N.Y., at The Armory. Marquette Women
