Golden Eagles Ready For BIG EAST Championships

Bloomington, Ind. - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads used the Hoosier Hills Invitational Friday night as a final tune-up for the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championships. Freshman Spencer Agnew and Connor Callahan also competed on Saturday at the 2010 USA Cross Country Championships in Spokane, Wash.

"We definitely got accomplished what we wanted with a couple BIG EAST qualifiers," said head coach Bert Rogers. "It was a good tune-up for next weekend."

With one final chance to reach BIG EAST-qualifying marks, Ron Vick and Joseph Kohut each took advantage in the pole vault and shot put, respectively.

Vick, a freshman from Morton Grove, Ill. reached a height of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.25 inches) to finish eighth in the pole vault.

Meanwhile, Kohut finished 16th in the shot put with a distance of 14.76 meters (48-05.25).

Freshman Chanel Franklin continued her improvement over the course of the indoor campaign, recording personal bests in the 60- and 200-meter dashes. In the 60, Franklin finished ninth in 7.87 seconds, while she recorded a time of 25.58 seconds in the 200. Franklin missed the conference qualifying mark in the 60 by two-hundredths of a second and by eight-hundredths of a second in the 200.

In the women's mile, sophomore Courtney Kelly recorded a personal-best time of 5:09.72 while Molly Arenberg ran a time of 5:13.15 to finish 15th.



In the 3,000-meter runs, both A.J. Gedwill and Kate Horan turned in solid performances. Gedwill turned in a time of 9:13.20 in the men's race while Horan ran the women's race in 10:58.89.

At the 2010 USA Cross Country Championships in Spokane, Wash. on Saturday afternoon, freshman Connor Callahan and Spencer Agnew each competed in the junior 8,000-meter race. Callahan finished 29th in 26:09, while Agnew was 33rd in 26:47.

The Golden Eagles return to action Sat., Feb. 20 at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in New York City.
