Men Finish 11th and Women 13th at BIG EAST Indoor Championship

GENEVA, Ohio- The Marquette University men's and women's track and field programs finished up competition at the 2013 BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this afternoon at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The men notched an 11th place finish, while the women came in 13th.

The women collected 14 points en route to a 13th place finish, which is the program's best finish since 2008 when it placed 12th with 28 points. The men wrapped up competition with 22 points.

Junior Kate Hein's performance in the 500-meter run highlighted MU's final day at the indoor conference meet. Hein placed sixth in the event, registering an indoor program-best time of 1:13.75.

Marquette also received points from freshman Tate Pashibin, who claimed a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches. Tate's jump was a new personal best and moved her into third all-time in MU program history. Senior Sarah MacCourtney also competed in the event and finished ninth with a jump of 5 feet, five inches (1.65 meters).

In the women's shot put, junior Kristen Gaffey had a personal-best throw of 46 feet, 10 inches to place her No. 6 on MU's all-time list. The Iowa City, Iowa, native placed eighth in the event, while teammate Kirsten Walker finished 13th.

On the track, freshman Molly Hanson collected a top-ten finish in the mile, earned an eighth-place finish in the event with a time of 4:53.59.

The women's relay teams turned in an impressive afternoon, both recording top-five program-best times. In the 4x400-meter relay,Hein along with fellow juniors Katie Kemmerer, Gretchen Homan, and freshman Laura Schweikert finished with a time of 3:48.98, which is No. 4 all-time mark in program history.

Freshmen Molly Hanson, Nicole Ethierm Kayla Spencer, and sophomore Katie Tolan turned in a time of 9:05.60 in the 4x800-meter relay to also claim the No. 4 all-time mark in program history. Both teams placed tenth overall in their respective events.

On the men's side, junior Michael Saindon notched a fourth place finish in the high jump with a mark of six feet, eight 1/4 inches (2.04 meters), while senior Cheldon Brown claimed eighth. Both cleared the 8 feet, 1/2 inch mark but Saindon placed higher on misses.

Senior Kyle Winter and freshman Anton Rice represented MU in the 800-meter run. The duo finished sixth and seventh in the event, with Winter turning in a time of 1:52.43 and Rice following right behind in a time of 1:53.43. Winter won his heat in the 800-meter on Saturday and was attempting to defend his conference title in the race from 2012.

The men's 4x800-meter relay team of sophomores Mitch Lacy and Brendan Frantz along with freshmen Donald McDonald and William Hennessy finished seventh overall with a time of 7:38.37, ranking fifth all time.

Seniors Patrick Maag and Connor Callahan competed in the 3,000-meter run and finished 18th and 24th, respectively.

The Golden Eagles return to action at the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 1-2 at Notre Dame.
