Track and Field Finishes Day One at BIG EAST Indoor Championships

Live Results |Schedule | BIG EAST Championship Central NEW YORK - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads wrapped up the first day of competition Saturday afternoon at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at The Armory. Freshman Kyle Winter, making his BIG EAST Championships debut in the 500-meter dash, advanced to the finals by finishing third in his heat and eighth overall with a time of 1:03.93. Winter's time is a personal best and moves him up to second in Marquette history in the event. The finals for the 500 will be run Sunday at 1:10 p.m. ET. Winter also ran on the Marquette men's distance medley relay squad that finished 10th in 10:00.81. In the mile, junior Olivia Johnson ran a time of 4:53.71 to advance to the finals tomorrow afternoon. Her time is a personal best and the fifth-fastest time in school history. In the men's mile, sophomore Jack Hackett advanced to Sunday's finals by finishing fourth in his preliminary race with a time of 4:13.59. Fellow sophomore Blake Johnson recorded a time of 4:12.62 in a faster heat, but was unable to advance because he finished ninth.
Marquette failed to advance any runners in the 800-meter run even though Sarah Verdoliva bettered her school record with a time of 2:12.05 to finish 12th, while Mike McCarthy finished 15th in 1:55.66 on the men's side. Juniors Nick Szczech and Brice Cleland competed in the 5,000-meter run, finishing 13th and 19th, respectively. Szczech recorded a personal-best time of 14:26.76, the third-fastest in MU history, while Cleland finished in 14:57.93. In the women's 400-meter dash, sophomore Stephanie Grant leaped to second place in MU history with her time of 57.52 seconds. Grant finished 17th in the race. The women's distance medley relay of Jayne Grebinski, Stephanie Grant, Sarah Verdoliva and Kristin Pelzel earned four points for the team with a fifth place finish in 11:45.03. In the field events, Carrie Schmid placed seventh in the pole vault, reaching a height of 3.60 meters (11 feet, 9.75 inches), while Ron Vick failed to reach a height in the men's event. In the women's weight throw, Rachel Thiel earned one point for the Golden Eagles with a toss of 15.99 meters (52-05.50), while Kelley Corcoran placed 11th with a throw of 15.38 meters (50-05.50). Jonathan Kusowski recorded the top distance in the men's weight throw to finish seventh and earn the Golden Eagles two points. Kusowski's heave of 17.78 meters (58-04.00) is a personal best and the third best distance in school history. Eric Matuszewski finished 14th with 16.48 meters (54-01.00), while senior captain Jeff Kluge fouled on his three attempts. In the team standings, the West Virginia women and the Notre Dame men lead heading into Sunday. The Golden Eagles will return to action at 9 a.m. ET tomorrow with Erynn James looking for an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the high jump. The meet is scheduled to conclude with the awards ceremony at 3:20 p.m. ET.
