Marquette Concludes Weekend at BIG EAST Indoor Championships
Feb. 21, 2010 NEW YORK - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads finished competition Sunday afternoon at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at The Armory. As a team, the men finished 12th with 4.50 points, while the women earned 9.50 points to finish 15th. "I was really happy after day one but we didn't have the best day on Sunday," head coach Bert Rogers said. "We had some solid results across the board for the weekend, but the big breakthrough that we hoped for never happened. We will get back to work and get ready for the outdoor season." The Villanova women earned their first BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championship title in 10 years, using the day's second-to-last event to clinch the victory. With a meet-best five individual titles, the Notre Dame men's team earned a convincing victory, outscoring its closest competitor by 42.50 points. Freshman Cheldon Brown and senior Erynn James were each able to earn points for MU in the high jump. Brown reached a height of 2.01 meters (6-feet-7 inches) to tie for eighth in the men's event, while James tied for third on the women's side with a leap of 1.70 meters (5-07.00). As a team, the men finished 12th with 4.50 points, while the women earned 9.50 points to finish 15th. In the mile, Olivia Johnson recorded a time of 4:58.60 to finish ninth, one spot shy of earning a point for the team. On the men's side, sophomore Jack Hackett finished 10th in 4:14.47. Meanwhile, Kyle Winter placed fifth in his heat and ninth overall in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:04.61. Senior Jayne Grebinski recorded a time of 9:42.11 in the 3,000-meter run to finish 10th. The women's 3,200-meter relay placed 10th in 9:10.99 with Molly Arenberg leading off, followed by Sarah Verdoliva, Kristin Pelzel and Johnson running the anchor leg. In the 1,600-meter relay, the women finished 13th with a time of 3:59.82, while the men placed 11th in 3:21.23. Sophomore Blake Johnson led the men's 3,200-meter relay squad to a seventh place finish in 7:41.24. Peter Bolgert, Mike McCarthy and Evan Ross also ran legs of the relay. In the shot put, senior Rachel Thiel placed 10th with a toss of 14.18 meters (46-06.25). On the men's side, Joe Kohut led a contingent of four Marquette throwers with a throw of 15.26 meters (50-00.75) to finish 10th. Women's Final Scores Men's Final Scores The Golden Eagles who did not travel to the BIG EAST Championships competed Friday at the Panther Tune-Up at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
