Marquette junior Brianna Dahm was named Most Outstanding Female Athlete of the 2003 Conference USA Track and Field Championships. The meet took place in Houston and saw the Golden Eagle women take fourth and men sixth.

Dahm took home two C-USA titles finishing first in the 3,000m and the Mile. Dahm's time of 4:50.16 in the Mile established a school record and was just 1.16 seconds off of the NCAA provisional mark. Dahm took second place in the Mile at last year's C-USA Indoor Championships and was just 1.15 seconds short of the C-USA meet record that was set last year.

"We knew she was going to have a good weekend, her hardest race was going to be the mile, but

Brianna was able to out kick her in a pretty exciting race," said head coach Dave Uhrich. In the 3,000m, Dahm and her Marquette teammates dominated the competition. Dahm finished first with a time of 9:47.65. Senior Susan Barth took second with a time of 9:50.39 and senior Jessica Swan was right behind her to complete the Marquette 1-2-3 finish. Swan's time was 9:54.04.

"It was a matter of Brianna just running with her teammates," Uhrich said.

Barth reclaimed her title in the 5,000m, finishing 13 seconds ahead of her closest competitor with a time of 17:00.97. This is the third time Barth has won a C-USA Indoor individual title, she was the 2002 champion in the 3,000m and the 2001 champion in the 5,000m. Barth also owns two C-USA outdoor titles.

"She did what she needed to do, she kept the pressure on the other girls and they couldn't keep up with Susan," said Uhrich.

Senior Jacqueline Swan placed fifth while freshmen Alison Sauer and Susanna Emond took seventh and eighth, respectively.

Senior Luke Kunze took third in the men's Mile with a time of 4:19.74 and was followed by freshman David Henderson (fifth place) and junior Jake Remitz (ninth place).

The women's Distance Medley relay repeated as champions taking first place with a time of 11:54.66. The team consisted of senior Jessica Swan and juniors Julianna Wesolowski, Jamie Haro and Dahm. Swan and Dahm were both members of last year's championship team as well.

"They defninately wanted to repeat, even though it wasn't the same team from last year, repeating was still important to them," said Uhrich.

The men's Distance Medley relay finished in second place with a time of 10:03.54. Kunze, sophomore Ryan Seebruck, freshman David Henderson and junior Jake Remitz were on the team that finished just three seconds behind the first place team, Charlotte.

Senior Crystal Larson took second place in the Weight Throw with a mark of 54 feet 7 inches. The throw was Larson's best of the season.

On the field for the men, sophomore Charles Mashozhera took second place in the Triple Jump with a mark of 49-7 3/4.

Sophomore Andy Ballard took second in the Shot Put with a throw of 53-11 3/4, a personal best and the best throw of any Golden Eagle this season. Ballard's fellow sophomore took sixth place.

Freshman Brent Des Roches ran the best 5,000m time that any Golden Eagle has all season en route to taking fourth place with a time of 14:56.94.

Dahm will now wait to see if her 3,000m time ran earlier in the season is good enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships which will take place on March 15 in Fayetteville, Ark.
