NOTRE DAME, Ind./MADISON, Wis. - Ten student-athletes from the Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams began the final weekend of indoor competition Friday evening at the Wisconsin NCAA Qualifier in Madison, Wis., and the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
At Wisconsin, the Golden Eagles were led by freshmen Kristen Gaffey and Kirsten Walker in the shot put. Gaffey placed fourth in 45 feet, 5 inches (13.84 meters), while Walker notched a personal best of 40 feet, 2 3/4 inches (12.26 meters) to finish eighth.
"It was a good step forward for the women, Kirsten in particular," associate head coach Mike Koenning said. "In the discus it was good for the freshman women to get out here and get their nerves out as it is the first time they have competed in the event this season."
Gaffey, along with fellow freshman Kathryn Koeck, competed in the discus for the first time in preparation for the outdoor campaign, which begins next weekend in Tampa, Fla. Gaffey threw the discus 39.89 meters, while Koeck finished with a mark of 39.15 meters.
Robert Bleem also threw the discus for the men but fouled on all three of his attempts.
Junior Lauren Darnall won the pole vault with a top height of 12 feet, 6 1/4 inches (3.82 meters). It is the fourth victory for Darnall in the pole vault this season.
The Marquette men's distance medley relay squad fell short of its goal of breaking the school record at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The squad finished eighth in its heat in a time of 9:59.00. The school record, set in 1981, is 9:51.23.
"Peter Bolgert ran the lead-off leg well and was three seconds faster than the time he posted at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Kyle Winter also did a nice job in his 400-meter leg and we were probably about five seconds ahead of where we were at the BIG EAST meet. We just didn't finish strong enough."
The men's mile and 3,000-meter runs at Notre Dame will conclude the indoor season for the Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon.
