Marquette Kicks off Outdoor Season at USF

TAMPA, Fla. – Marquette’s throwers kicked off the 2014 outdoor track and field season on Thursday evening at the USF Track and Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla., with senior Samantha Kennedy taking home top honors in the women’s hammer throw.

Kennedy tied her personal best in the hammer throw to win the event with a distance of 55.18 meters (181 feet), while senior Kristen Gaffey was seventh with a distance of 45.72 meters (150 feet). Kennedy is currently fifth all-time in Marquette history in the event.

The Surrey, British Columbia native also competed in the javelin and was eighth with a heave of 33.34 meters (109 feet, 4 inches).

In the men’s hammer throw, redshirt junior Bret Hardin placed second with a top distance of 52.58 meters (172 feet, 6 inches) and senior Patrick Stuart was 11th at 39.36 meters (129 feet, 2 inches).

Events resume at 8 a.m. CT Friday with the men’s javelin, in which Marquette freshman John Krzyszkowski will make his much anticipated NCAA debut in the event.

Marquette junior William Koeck is also scheduled to compete Friday in the men’s weight throw at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. beginning at 4 p.m. CT.
