ORLANDO, Fla. – The Marquette University men’s and women’s track and field teams kicked off the 2017 outdoor season at the Black & Gold Challenge hosted by UCF on Friday.

John Krzyszkowski highlighted the day’s performances with a strong second-place finish in the javelin, recording a distance of 69.54 meters. Also competing on day one of the UCF Black & Gold Challenge was the men’s and women’s hammer throw and the women’s javelin.

In his first competition of the season, Krzyszkowski fell just shy of his personal-best and school-record mark of 72.23 meters, set last July. It also fell just short of Kevin Foster, who registered a toss of 72.09 meters to take the win despite scratching on four of his six attempts, while Krzyszkowski successfully made four throws for an average of 67.3 meters. His best throw came on his final attempt.

In the men’s hammer, Joel McBride led the way with a fourth-place finish on a toss of 49.32 meters, while Brendan McKinney (48.32 meters) and Austin Stellpflug (38.12 meters) placed fifth and eighth overall, respectively.

In the women’s hammer, Keely Knobbe took home a ninth-place finish with a distance of 49.88 meters. Also competing were Monica Voudrie and Ashley Gaffey.

Monique Felix opened the year with a fourth-place finish in the javelin, recording a distance of 35.57 meters on her first toss.

The team will remain in Orlando as day two is scheduled to begin with field events at 10 a.m. Central time. Live results will be available: http://halfmiletiming.com/event/ucf-black-gold-challenge/
