ATHENS, Ga. -- On the second day of competition at the Georgia Relays, junior Jayne Grebinski, running in her first career 3,000-meter steeplechase, recorded a BIG EAST and NCAA qualifying time of 10:37.06 to win the race by over 42 seconds.

"Jayne ran very well today and the steeplechase was definitely one of the highlight events on day with Courtney (Kelly) and Kate (Horan) as well," said head coach Bert Rogers. "Overall we got done what we wanted to achieve going in and I am excited going forward with the season."

Grebinski etched her name in the MU record books with her time in the steeplechase, placing her second all-time behind All-American Brianna Dahm in the event. Dahm's school record time of 10:01.77 was recorded in 2002 and remains the gold standard at Marquette.

Grebinski is the record school-record holder in the 5,000-meter run, but the MU coaches deemed that her athletic ability, despite her diminutive stature, would best be on display in the steeplechase.

"Jayne running the steeplechase seemed like a natural thing," said Rogers. "It is a good distance for her and with the fact that she is a good athlete and strong runner, we figured that she would do well."

Also in the steeplechase, freshmen Courtney Kelly and Kate Horan took second and third, respectively while reaching the BIG EAST time as well.

After tying the indoor school record in the high jump her last time out, Erynn James captured first place with a height of 1.81 meters (5-08.75) to qualify for the BIG EAST meet and the NCAA Regional. Marisa Handley also competed in the event and finished seventh.

Liz Wilkie finished fourth in the pole vault, reaching a height of 3.26 meters (10-08.25).

In the women's javelin, Marquette collected spots 5-7 with Kelly Magennis' BIG EAST qualifying distance of 39.21 meters (128-08) leading Audra Ketelsen and Catherine Benage.

In the discus, Ketelsen placed sixth with a distance of 42.69 meters (140-01) to reach another BIG EAST mark.

Placing second in the 1,500-meter run was Kristin Pelzel with a time of 4:47.05.

The women's distance medley relay squad of Olivia Johnson, Dani Owen, Katlin Millin and Anna Weber finished third in a time of 12:26.03.

For the men, the distance medley squad of Mark Kopecki, Eric Meissner, Billy Schlottke and Scott Mueller placed second with a time of 10:10.63.

Sophomore Nick Byom tied Ray Bratchett's 2005 mark of 2.05 meters (6-08.75) in the high jump to place place him third in the MU record book.

Running in his first 400-meter dash, sophomore Tyler O'Brien finished fifth in a time of 49.08, while Randey Fisher placed directly behind him in sixth place.

Competing in his first meet since last season, sophomore Peter Bolgert won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:01.93. Brice Cleland and Drew Craig also competed in the event, finishing sixth and 12th, respectively.

The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday at the UTEP Springtime Invitational.
