March 28, 2008
MILWAUKEE - Marquette freshman Tyler O'Brien won the men's elite division of the 200 meters Friday at Missouri Relays in Columbia, Mo. The performance was one of the Golden Eagles' best during opening-day competition.
"Overall, the first day of the meet was pretty solid," said MU head coach Bert Rogers. "It was a nice day to compete, and everybody came ready to go, so a good first day. I am excited for day two."
O'Brien's time of 21.56 was a Marquette freshman record (third best in school history) and qualified him for the BIG EAST Men's and Women's Outdoor Championship in May. Teammate Raymond Bratchett finished the 200 meters with a time of 21.86, also a BIG EAST qualifier, to place second in the university division.
On the women's side, Rachel Thiel and Kelley Corcoran placed third and fourth, respectively, with throws of 42.93m (140-10) and 42.46m (139-04), while Jenna Ehlen had a season-best mark of 51.84m (170-01) to take fifth in the elite section.
Mike Boedeker placed fourth in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 49.98m (164-07) and Jeff Kluge took fifth with a 48.96m (160-07), a personal best. In the men's javelin open division, Robert Bleem had a season-best mark and met BIG EAST standard with his throw of 54.59m (179-01).
