Golden Eagles Conclude Lee Calhoun Invitational

MACOMB, Ill - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads wrapped up competition Saturday afternoon at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational. The women's squad placed second overall with 130.33 points, while the men finished seventh.
"I thought that we had a pretty good day two of the meet," head coach Bert Rogers said. "We had some surprising performances and some good things happened. There were solid marks across the board and the team competed hard."
Freshman Chanel Franklin won the 100-meter dash, while setting a personal-best mark with a time of 11.92 seconds. The mark was also a freshman record.
Senior Sarah Verdoliva, running in the 1,500-meter run for the first time, recorded a time of 4:38.71 to win the event.
In the men's 1,500, sophomore Garrett McKnight placed fourth with a time of 4:01.31.
In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Stephanie Grant placed third with a time of 57.88 seconds. On the men's side, Randey Fisher finished fifth in 49.52 seconds.
In the women's throws, senior Rachel Thiel placed second in the shot put (14.29 meters) and ninth in the discus (40.42 meters). Catherine Benage won the javelin (37.20 meters), while Lauren Benjamin placed seventh (30.70 meters).
On the men's side, senior Jeff Kluge finished second in the discus with a throw of 51.41 meters.
Marquette took the top two spots in the women's pole vault as senior Carrie Schmid won the event and sophomore Lauren Darnall placed second. Schmid won with a height of 3.79 meters (12 feet, 5 1/4 inches), while Darnall recorded a lifetime-best mark of 3.64 meters (11 feet, 11 1/4 inches).
