NORWALK, Calif. - Senior Erynn James recorded a Marquette University school-record height of 1.80 meters (5 feet, 10 3/4 inches) in the high jump at the Long Beach Invitational as the MU track and field squad concluded a successful weekend Saturday afternoon.

With a select handful of athletes at the Long Beach Invitational, a bulk of the MU student-athletes also competed at the Iowa Invitational and Wheaton College Twilight.

"The best performance of the weekend was definitely turned in by Erynn James," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Erynn moved up from third on the Marquette top-10 list to grab the school record and also moved up the NCAA list."

James won her event at the Long Beach Invitational after tying for fifth place yesterday at the Mt. SAC Relays.

In the women's 1,500-meter run, senior Jayne Grebinski placed seventh in 4:32.92, and was followed by Sarah Verdoliva (4:36.54) and Kristin Pelzel (4:41.98). Verdoliva's mark was a PR.

Junior Olivia Johnson turned in a time of 2:13.54 to qualify for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.

On the men's side, Peter Bolgert finished fifth in the 1,500 in 3:49.58, ahead of teammate Blake Johnson's time of 3:52.94.

"Peter had an awesome weekend, with his times in the steeplechase and then today in the 1,500 meters," Rogers said.

Freshman Chanel Franklin competed in the 100-meter dash and finished seventh in 12.11 seconds.

"I thought it was a big weekend for Chanel, with her coming out here as a freshman and competing well," Rogers said.

Sophomore Stephanie Grant finished third at the Iowa Invitational in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.25 seconds, only one-hundredth of a second off the BIG EAST mark. The time was also a personal best.

Sophomore Kate Horan ran a season-best time of 11:09.68 to finish third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Classmate Courtney Kelly also competed in the event.

Freshman Sarah MacCourtney, who joined the squad at midseason, placed second in high jump with a leap of 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches).

In the pole vault, Carrie Schmid won her second-consecutive meet title, reaching 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1 1/2 inches), while Lauren Darnall came in third with 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7 3/4 inches).

Also earning an event victory was Rachel Thiel in the shot put with a toss of 14.76 meters (48 feet, 5 1/4 inches). Thiel also placed second in the hammer throw in 50.37 meters (165 feet, 3 inches) and fourth in the discus with a distance of 42.40 meters (139 feet, 1 inch). Thiel's mark in the hammer throw moved her up to No. 8 all-time at Marquette.

Jamie Roth and Kelley Corcoran both also reached BIG EAST marks in the hammer throw with distances of 50.12 and 49.76 meters, respectively.

Catherine Benage and Lauren Benjamin finished 1-2 in the javelin. Benage reached 38.45 meters (126 feet, 2 inches), while Benjamin's top throw went 33.65 meters (110 feet, 5 inches).
