MILWAUKEE - Amid early showers, the Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads held a successful Marquette Twilight meet at the Melvin "Bus" Shimek Memorial Track and Field Facility Saturday afternoon.

The weather conditions improved throughout the day after a heavy downpour during the javelin and hammer throw, which started at 11 a.m. at the MU Throws Field.

New facility records were set in the pole vault by senior Carrie Schmid and the 3,000-meter steeplechase by sophomore Courtney Kelly, while junior Joseph Kohut recorded a personal best to win the shot put.

In her final home meet, Schmid reached a height of 3.65 meters, while her three attempts at 3.80 meters fell short in the rain.

Kelly ran a time of 11:11.39 in the steeplechase to set the facility record in that event.

Kohut recorded a personal-best mark of 15.55 meters to win the shot put in an event that came down to he and senior Eric Matuszewski. Kohut's mark is the best for a Golden Eagle this season.

Senior Jeff Kluge won both the discus and the hammer throw with distances of 48.26 and 56.41 meters, respectively.

In the 1,500-meter run, junior Kristin Pelzel won in a time of 4:46.98, while sophomore Carly Windt recorded the second-fastest time by an MU athlete this spring with a 3,000-meter time of 10:25.13.

Freshman Cheldon Brown took home a title in the high jump with a leap of 1.85 meters, finishing right ahead of senior T.J. Hodgson's jump of 1.80 meters.

Competing unattached, junior Jon Kusowski won the javelin with a toss of 48.65 meters.

Also competing unattached was a group in the men's 4x100-meter relay which included junior Tyler O'Brien, pole vault coach Zach Pawlowski, former Golden Eagle Nick Van Deraa and Marquette men's soccer player Michael Greene

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, April 30 at the 2010 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in Cincinnati.
