Marquette Concludes Action at Drake Relays

Senior Wally Ellenson
April 30, 2016

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Golden Eagles battled the elements once again on Saturday, braving another rainy and cold final day at the 107th Drake Relays.

Senior Wally Ellenson was featured in the highly anticipated high jump event that was moved indoors due to the weather conditions. Ellenson cleared his first four heights with ease, leaving only three jumpers with the opportunity to advance past 2.22 meters (7 feet, 3.25 inches). The Rice Lake, Wisconsin native was close on his third and final attempt, but unable to clear the bar as he settled for third place in a very strong field with a height of 2.18 meters (7 feet, 1.75 inches).

Sophomore and Fond du Lac, Wisconsin native, Abigail Busse, ran a challenging 3,000-meter steeplechase amid poor conditions with a time of 11:02.68.

The men's and women's distance medley relay teams were also in action, highlighted by the women's side which set the No. 4 mark all-time at Marquette. The team of Jessica Parker, Alison Parker, Meghan Carroll and Jennifer Parker ran a time of 11:52.26 to place 13th overall.

On the men's side, the team of Aric Miller, Jay Whalen, Brendan Franz and Brad Eagan came in 16th with a time of 10:10 56.

"Overall, Drake was pretty good," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Today was rough, windy and cold - not conducive for running really fast. We still had some solid performances with the women's distance medley relay running the No. 4 mark all-time.

"I decided, because of the weather this morning, not to run our sprint medley relays. Both teams had some good times in already this season and, with it being this close to BIG EAST, we didn't want to risk any injury. Wally (Ellenson) jumped inside and jumped well - competed really hard. And our distance medley teams had good performances when the weather improved a bit this afternoon."

Those that didn't compete for Marquette at the Drake Relays will head to the Drake Alternative meet hosted by UW-Whitewater on Sunday. The meet, originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved back due to weather poor conditions on Saturday.
