STORRS, CONN. - The Marquette men are in ninth place with 11 points, and the women are in ninth place with 12 points after day one of the BIG EAST Track and Field Championships at the Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn.

"Overall we had a pretty good first day," said head coach David Uhrich. "We feel like we have quite a few more places to get points tomorrow. Out main goal is to stay within the top ten."

One of the many highlights of the day on the men's team came in the discus throw, where Damian Anisko (163-5) and Michael Boedeker (162-8) finished fourth and eighth. Anisko earned five points for his finish, and Boedeker, one. Only three student-athletes in school history have thrown farther than the two. Michael Heim also competed in the event. He finished 12th with a toss of 148-5.

Tom Sage, who began the day in second place in the decathlon, finished in fourth with 6,347 points, earning five points toward the team total. Only two others in MU history have scored more points in the decathlon than Sage.

In the 1,500m trials, Tommy Schmitz crossed the line with the 12th-best time of the day, 3:48.98, earning his spot in Sunday's final.

Brent Des Roches and Kyle Saginus each competed in the 10,000m, Saturday. Saginus crossed the line in 15th place in a time of 30:50.35. Des Roches finished 17th in 31:05.55.

In a time of 9:19.68, Jeremy Williams finished 10th in the 3,000m steeplechase.

 

 

Jed Burey was unable to qualify for the finals of the 800m. He finished with the 15th-fastest time of the day, 1:52.95, a season-best.

In the shot put, Eric Matuszewski finished 10th with a career-best toss of 47-9. Joseph Kohut was 12th with a throw of 44-2.75.

T.J. Hodgson cleared 6-4.25 to finish 11th in the high jump. Ray Bratchett also competed in the event, but was unable to clear his opening height.

Highlighting the day on the women's side was the effort of Jenna Mahaffey and Audra Ketelsen in the discus. Mahaffey finished fifth in the event with a season-best toss of 149-2, earning four team points. Ketelsen's throw of 147-0 was good for sixth and three team points.

Kelly Magennis scored two points in the javelin, finishing seventh with a toss of 133-11, bettering her freshman and school record. Audra Ketelsen also competed in the event, finishing 14th with a toss of 120-10.

Michaela Courtney and Cassie Peller each qualified for the finals of the 1,500m. Courtney crossed the line with the seventh-best time of the day in 4:28.19, while Peller notched the eighth-fastest time, 4:29.03. Kaitlyn Chambers also ran in the 1,500m. She finished in 22nd with a time of 4:48.01.

In the 3,000m steeplechase, Heidi Lindeman finished 12th in a season-best time of 11:14.79.

Anna Weber ran 37:40.71 to finish 13th in the 10,000m.

Running in the 800m trials was Kristina Malin. She finished 10th with a time of 2:15.51 and did not qualify for Sunday's final.

Kristin Stoniecki earned three team points in the pole vault, finishing sixth after clearing a height of 11-11.75. Elizabeth Wilke also competed in the event, but was unable to clear her opening height.

Christina Flowers placed 18th in the long jump with a leap of 17-5.5.

Rachael Thiel (40-8.25), Mahaffey (40-6) and Kelly Corcoran (38-1.25) finished 14th, 15th and 21st in the shot put.

The final day of competition will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's javelin. Running events will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's 400m relay.
