May 6, 2007
STORRS,CONN. - The Marquette men's team finished 12th place, and the women's team 11th place at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Sunday, at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn. The Golden Eagle men scored 21 points, 121 behind team champion Louisville, and the women tallied 30 points, 90.5 behind champion, Notre Dame. The highlight of the day came when the four Golden Eagles on the women's 4x800m relay set an outdoor school record with a time of 8:55.44. The team, which placed third, was made up of junior Cassie Peller, senior Kristina Malin, senior Michaela Courtney, and anchored by freshman Katlin Millin, improving the previous record by 0.23, originally set in 2006. In addition to the record, all four Golden Eagles were named to the BIG EAST All-Conference team and picked up six points towards the team total. Another impressive feature of the day was Marquette's three qualifiers for the NCAA Mideast Outdoor Regionals. The first came during the women's 1500m as both senior Michaela Courtney and junior Cassie Peller posted good enough times to earn an entry in Regionals. Courtney finished third and earned All-Conference honors by posting a time of 4:25.08. The run also signified Courtney's best outdoor time this season. Peller finished close behind in fourth with a time of 4:27.11. The three-four combination was good enough to earn the Golden Eagles 11 team points.
Senior Damien Anisko also qualified for the NCAA Regionals when he posted a distance of 56.40m in the hammer throw. The total of 185-00 was strong enough for sixth place and three team points. Also in the hammer throw was junior Michael Boedeker who finished 17th with a distance of 156-00. The men's 4x800 team put up a good showing as well, picking up four team points, when they finished fifth with a time of 7:35.08. The 4x100 relay finished eighth with a time of 42.54, earning a team point in the process. In the 5000m, sophomore Scott Mueller picked up a team point when he finished eighth with a time of 14:40.06. The 4x400 relay came in ninth with a time of 3:15.58. Senior Tommy Schmitz finished 12th in the 1500m with a time of 3:53.44. In the pole vault, senior Zach Pawlowski finished tied for 11th after failing to clear 4.65m. Freshman Jayne Grebinski earned the Marquette women a point in the 5000m after finishing eighth with a time of 17:32.63. In the hammer throw, senior Jenna Mahaffey finished 11th with a throw of 149-06. Sophomore Shannon Fritz went 10.76m to finish in 18th in the triple jump. Freshman Erynn James jumped 5-05.00 in the high jump, finishing well enough for 13th place. Sophomore Lana Rabas tied for 18th. The Golden Eagles will return to the track, May 10-11, for the Dr. Keeler Invitational, and May 12, for the Ohio River Challenge. |
